PLAYBY: Jane Lynch
FULL NAME: Coral Fincham
NICKNAMES: Coral, called Corrie by her family
AGE: 50
GENDER: Female
ETHNICITY: White British
JOB: Mayor
RESIDENTIAL AREA: Cedar Street
PERSONALITY: Coral's overwhelming single trait is caring. Put anything in her care and it will be perfect. Children, animals, objects, anything! Even since a young child she has been like this, picking up stray animals and nursing them back to health. She always looks on the positive side of everything, and finding the best in everyone - even when others can't. In general, she is a pretty happy, contented woman.
Corrie is always extremely loyal, trusting and trustworthy. She makes friends easily, and is often surrounded by a large group of people - but she can actually call them all true friends. Put your trust in Coral, and you will never be let down. No matter what it is she always keeps her word. Her downfall is that she tends to trust others a little too easily, but that hasn't happened for a while.
Surprisingly active for her age perhaps, Coral still rushes about like a mad woman - or at least looks like she is. Believe it or not, despite the impression of constantly being busy, she is super-organized. I don't think she has ever missed a deadline in her life. She goes running whenever she gets a chance to keep fit, and eats healthily - not worrying about her shape, she just doesn't want to be able to be classed as old!
BACKGROUND: Coral grew up in a rural town in Scotland, in the 1960's. Nothing much interesting happened during her childhood - she lived on a farm in a stable family of 5 children. All farming kids grew up on horses then, and Corrie was no exception. The only girl, she was her mother's favorite, but - despite nothing major happening - she didn't get on so well with her father. Even throughout her teens nothing spectacular happened, she finished school and went to university (a first in her family), getting a degree in Business and French. She left university in 1985, avoiding the madness associated with that time, and married her husband the same year.
Everything went well for the first 5 years of their marriage, although Corrie had difficulty falling pregnant, suffering several miscarriages over the next few years. The birth of their daughter Carol, pleased everyone immensely, and everyone couldn't wait for another child. Taking care of Carol took over Corrie's life, and her husband started complaining she had no time left for him. Just a few months later, she found out he was having an affair, and his mistress was pregnant. Said mistress had no interest in the baby, and was planning on having an abortion. Whilst Corrie's husband was begging her forgiveness, they decided to take on the child when she was born. This caused outrage with Corrie's parents, and the in-laws, as her husband's mistress was dark-skinned. Ignoring the criticisms, Corrie put down anyone who said their marriage wouldn't work, blaming it on racism. But just a few months after Emily was born and officially adopted by Corrie, her husband was caught having another affair. This time, he left for good.
So Coral found herself without a husband, with her 2 year old daughter, and 6 month old daughter of her ex-husband. Filing for divorce on the grounds of adultery, it all went quickly and she was granted custody of both children - he didn't want anything to do with them. Slowly re-building her life up, she trained as a nursery nurse, and then when her children were in their teens she worked as a nanny. Emily grew up happily, asking about the color of her skin compared to her mother's/sister's when she was five or six years old. She got enough of the story to satisfy her, and she knew the whole thing by the time she was 14. Carol, on the other hand, got in with the wrong crowd, dropping out of school with no GCSE'S at 15 and moving in with her boyfriend of a month. Coral had very little contact with her during the next couple of years, but Emily stayed at home doing her A-Levels until she was 18.
When Emily wanted to attend Park College, Coral followed her, wanting a change of scenery after the children she was nannying for went to school. A week before they were due to leave, her first daughter - Carol - turned up with a 6 year old in tow. Her daughter apparently couldn't cope with the child, and the social services had the paperwork through in a week - Coral officially adopting the youngster. Now in Park, Corrie plans to run for Mayor, although if that doesn't work out, she has noticed a gap in the market for a nursery and primary school in town - the children are currently having to go miles away!
