When you try your best but don’t succeedWhen you get what you want but not what you needWhen you feel so tired, but you can’t sleepStuck in reverse Chuck stopped at the bar. The sun was busy setting, and his work was finished for the day. Dusk marked the end of another lonely day, another day without Summer, and another day that he didn’t want to end. The BMW looked out of place in the town, but he couldn’t care less. He was one of the first that had arrived, and he nodded at the band that was busy setting up. Soon the place would be filling up with the regulars that arrived everyday for their pint of beer and to catch up with friends. Usually he just sat and watched the people. Some got stinking drunk, and others nursed the same glass for many hours on end, mulling in their thoughts. The bar was looking much decorated, as it was just a few days until Christmas. “You playing with us tonight Chuck?” James called from the stage in his Yorkshire accent. “Yeah sure,” he replied with a friendly smile. At least the piano keys would be friendly towards him.
Chuck started warming up, playing the scales that were ingrained in his mind from a young age. He always breezed through them, the black and white melding into notes that would later be classified as music. As everybody tuned instruments and checked strings, Chuck played a few of his personal favourites. It didn’t matter that it sounded distorted with the background noise, it made sense to him. He started with Piano Man from Billy Joel, moving onto one that he had written himself. Unnoticed, the band started playing their own complicated melodies that accented the piano. As Chuck ended it off, he realised how depressing it sounded. “Woman troubles m’lad?” James asked him. Chuck gave the older man a wry look, and answered, “Nope, just missing a certain one. Let’s kick this music up a gear,” he added to the comment.
A lively jig broke the gloom, and so it went on for a few hours. It was just after seven thirty when he took a break and went to the bar for a drink. The double Bourbon tasted good, but he couldn’t enjoy it with his melancholy surrounding him. He wasn’t going home for Christmas. Hell, he couldn’t face his parents, mainly because they would point out all the mistakes in his life as present, and then continue to point out how much they disliked Melissa, and how Max was such a sweet boy, he just went wrong when he came out of the closet. He just didn’t have the strength to deal with that.
He then mulled over the previous Christmas. It was just after he had reunited with Summer, and had been just the happiest time of his life. Melissa hadn’t taken it too well, and even now they were barely talking. Max was dealing with his own issues, and somehow had ended up being lost in his own love life. Max was strong, but needed to figure out what he wanted out of life.
Swallowing down the last of the bourbon, he resumed his position at the piano, and in so doing put out the sadness. At least he was good at one thing that wasn’t related to horses, and that was faking happiness. He had done so for the last fifteen years, and had perfected the art. His hazel eyes usually beheld the truth, but not everyone knew that.
And the tears come streaming down your face When you lose something you can’t replace When you love someone, but it goes to waste Could it be any worse \\TAGGED//Sync \\WORDS//566 \\NOTES// \\MUSE//Is lingering \\LISTENING TO//the TV \\OUTFIT//Coming \\LYRICS//Fix You by Coldplay \\CREDIT//to Onzy.

Her hands rang out her hair mercilessly as she got ready to vacate the shower. It was only her second day here, but already it felt like home. But you still haven't seen him. Her thought made her brow furrow, a mask of slipping over her features. Her towel covered body walked toward the sink, and picked up the hairdryer which sat on the counter beside it. Her hands worked gently as she dried her locks, running her nails through it carefully as she dried it. In no time, the locks cascaded loosely down her back, coming to a stop just below her shoulders. Any longer, and she'd be annoyed by the length. It was already starting to get on her nerves. The female gave a snort at her appearance, she needed to brush her hair desperately. With a smile on her lips, she ran the brush through the dark locks carefully, not wanting to pull unnecessary amounts out. It then fell as if she'd spend hours styling it. It always did when she never did more than brush it. She was a lucky one. With her body now thoroughly dry, she decided it was time for the makeup. As she applied it, she wondered why on earth she was going out tonight. To drown your sorrows, that's why. her mind concluded, and another frown etched on her face. Banishing all negative thoughts from her mind, she went into mechanical mode. She learnt how to do this years ago, when she'd suffered the abuse she rarely thought about. It helped her get through it, blocking out all the psychological damage they had caused to her. The finishing touches were applied, and she was finally ready. Moisturizer was applied to her body carefully, and then the towel was pulled back around herself. "Now to get dressed." she announced to herself, opening the door to the bathroom.
As she left the room, Bear greeted her. His large form quivered with excitement and his tail thumped the ground heartily. "Hello my gorgeous boy." she cooed, stooping down to give him a fuss. Her gentle fingers caressed his cranium and around his neck, and she then began to scratch behind his ears and along his back. He gave a content sigh and swiped his pink tongue over her arm in thanks. "Such a good boy." she said, kissing him on the forehead. He wagged his tail in response. "I'm going out okay? I'll be back later, and if I'm not too late I promise to take you for a walk. Deal?" she told him as he trailed her toward her bedroom. Making him sit, she closed the door behind herself and began to flick through her wardrobe. She selected her clothes quickly, slipping herself into jeans and a woolen jumper. She needed the warmth, she was going to walk into town as she hated using the car. Her feet then slipped into boots and she pulled a thick coat onto her petite frame. The scarf around her neck was next, and then she was ready. Leaving her room, she stooped down to give Bear one more pat. The dog gave a gruff bark and then a whine. He obviously didn't want her to go anywhere. She nearly relented, but straightened up. "I'll be back later!" she called as she left the apartment, leaving Bear to have the run of it.
She somewhat gracefully descended the stairs of the silent building, her dark locks falling in front of her face as she watched where she was walking. She wasn't the most sure footed of people. Her mind was filled with images of Chuck as she walked, her teeth sank into her lower lip. She hadn't told him she was coming, and she was beginning to regret it. Two day she'd been here, and it already felt worse than being in America away from him. The feeling was awful when you knew the person was living in the same town with you, and you cannot find them anywhere. The female knew she was getting more and more depressed by the second, so she switched her thoughts over to Fable and Digger. The pair were in quarantine and she couldn't wait to get them out of there. She missed them both dearly. Apparently they were loving it though, Fable was getting the most attention he'd had in ages. Summer grinned, she'd never met such a soppy stallion. Everyone loved Fable, it was hard to ignore the handsome brute. Summer's thoughts were snatched from her though. She passed by a large group of men. They were all of various ages. Their chatter paused as she passed by, some even offered her wolf whistles and directed lewd comments toward her. Her cheeks flushed in anger. If they knew she was the new police officer in town, they'd have thought twice. Or maybe not, depending on how drunk they were. But at least if she were on duty, she'd be able to do something about their behavior. A sigh left her lips once again. The cat calls continued until she entered the bar which had thankfully come into sight. Her frame disappeared into the room, and she heard the disappointment expressed by the men. She had to chuckle. The warmth assaulted her body immediately. It caused her cheeks to flush a light pink, which always looked attractive on her pale skin. She smiled warmly as a few greeted her as she passed them, making her way straight to the bar. She didn't glance at the stage.
The boy behind the bar perked up when she came into sight. Obviously he thought she was appealing to the eye. She rolled her eyes discreetly. The boy approached her and asked her order, a cheeky grin on his face. She couldn't help but return it. As she spoke, her American accent stood out like a sore thumb. A few turned to look at her. She just hoped they didn't think she was one of those dumb Americans who knew nothing about anything. That wasn't her at all. She asked for a Vodka and Coke, waiting patiently for the boy to make it. She handed over the money and he gave her the drink. She caught the look of disappointment crossing his features as she turned to find a table. "Bless him." she murmured quietly, a smile painted on her lips. She placed her drink on the table, and carefully placed herself into the chair. Her coat slipped from her shoulders and sat gently on the back of the chair. Her scarf was also removed. She then finally looked up to the stage where the music was coming from, and the sight that greeted her made her jaw go slack. A gasp left her, and she stood up stupidly. She had no idea what to do with herself. There, up on stage, behind the piano, was Chuck. The female stared right at him, sure that her mind was playing tricks on her. It couldn't be that easy. Could it? She was still standing, eyes locked on Chuck. She was suddenly aware that many eyes were on her. But still she could not sit. She wondered if he had seen her yet, he seemed pretty absorbed in what he was playing. So she stood waiting, not approaching mostly due to the fact that she couldn't get her legs to move. Look up, look up, look up! she chanted in her mind, a slow smile spreading over her lips. It really was him!

When you try your best but don’t succeedWhen you get what you want but not what you needWhen you feel so tired, but you can’t sleepStuck in reverse Chuck allowed the improvised notes to flow freely from his mind to be transferred onto the keys. The sweet melodies were a few simple bars, but embellished. He was lost in the music, and the music lost him. Ending the song, James looked at him, raising a quizzical eyebrow. He had never heard Chuck play that well, but he knew the man was a good player. So what you wanna do know, the man asked Chuck. Chuck paused for a moment staring at the keys. "Take a break. I need it after that," he answered the older man with a smile. James nodded before replying, You can always come and talk if you need it. Oh and the missus says if you are alone on Christmas then you are welcome to come over. Chuck wondered what he had done to deserve the man's friendship, and friendliness. Sometimes James was more a father figure than his own father ever was. "Thanks James. Tell her I appreciate the offer. I'll let you know soon enough."
As Chuck looked up and scanned the audience, yet he didn't see anyone except the one he wanted to see for the last few months. As always, she took his breath away. It was a dream, he was just dreaming. In a few seconds he would wake up and she wouldn't be there. She would be in America, with Fable and Digger, and he would be in Hertfordshire, lonely as always.
"Su..Sum...Summer?" he stammered out. His face was a mask of shock and love. He made his way down, and held her face in his hands. People just stared at them, but slowly lost interest. "When did arrive? Why didn't you tell me? Are you really here?" the questions came out. He still couldn't believe it. It really was her, and she really was here. On impulse, like all those months ago, he kissed her. She still had the same taste, honey and something, but this time he let it linger. Kissing her forehead, he drew away, and looked into her eyes. "I never want to be away from you again. Even if it was only a few months," he said, his vocals soft and loving.

Her frame shook in anticipation as he finally looked at her, her blue eyes sparkling out of pure happiness. Her whole frame was shivering as he approached, she was like a bottle of pop all fizzed up. As he stuttered her name, all she could do was nod. Her stomach was being assaulted by butterflies. And then his hands cupped her face, and she gave a gentle sigh. Never had something felt so right. A flood of questions assaulted her next, and she gave a heart laugh. Before she could answer them though, his lips found hers. She hadn't expected it, so her eyes were still wide open. Closing them, she savored his taste. She couldn't quite place it, but she was pretty sure she'd have a while to try to determine it. She wasn't leaving his side again, unless ordered of course. All too soon, the lips left hers and were pressed tenderly to her forehead. She gave another content sigh. Then he pulled away and looked her directly in the eye. If anyone else would have done that, she'd have been nervous. His words made her heart rate increase, she knew he meant it. She stepped closer to him and fit snuggly against his chest. Her arms wrapped around his waist, it was her way of saying she wasn't going anywhere.
She finally pulled apart from him, and then went to take her seat. She gestured for him to sit too. She needed to answer those questions he'd asked. "I arrived yesterday," she started once they had sat. A small smile played on her lips. Her hand stretched out to hold his, the cold skin connected with the warmth of his. She frowned a little, she hadn't thought she was that cold. "The answer to your second question, I didn't tell you because I wanted it to be a surprise. Apparently it was just that." she chuckled, her fingers gently caressing the back of his hand. "And to answer question number three, yes it's really me." she smirked, leaning over and pressing her lips to his cheek. It was insane how much she had missed him, and she really didn't want to stop touching him, being so close to him. But, they were in the middle of a busy bar. She pulled back regretfully, a playful smile upon her lips. She wasn't going to play tease just yet. They had a little catching up to do.
Her eyes lingered on his face, making sure nothing had changed since they'd parted ways a few months back. It hadn't. Everything was still the same, maybe a little tired but to Summer, that made him that little bit more sexy. A smirk lifted her lips at her thoughts. "What's it like living here? The people? Your job?" she asked, making insignificant conversation. She didn't like where her thoughts were going, at this rate she'd have him out in the back alley. A horrified look passed over her face, she quickly banished the thoughts from her head. Not seeing him in so long wasn't having such a good effect on her. Her mind went into overdrive, as it always did when she was nervous. Just wait for the verbal diarrhea. Oh wait, here it comes. "I got a dog." she blurted suddenly. She realized she'd said it a little too loud, and many people on the surrounding tables had turned to look at her. She glanced around, her face flushing in embarrassment. She mouthed the word sorry to a few of them, before ducking her head in shame. What was wrong with her? Oh, she knew. The fact that she was sat beside a very handsome man that she hadn't seen in months and all she wanted to do was rip his clothes of in the middle of a busy bar was what was wrong. Before she could stop herself, she began to chuckle. If he knew what was going on in her head, she knew he'd be laughing along with her. She was being stupid. Her head raised slowly, and she flicked her dark locks out of her face. The pink coloring in her cheeks had subsided, and she looked at Chuck once more. With a flash of a flirty smile, it was obvious she was settled once more. Back to normal Summer. Sort of.

When you try your best but don’t succeedWhen you get what you want but not what you needWhen you feel so tired, but you can’t sleepStuck in reverse Chuck took a seat next to the one he loved. He tried his best to control his own thoughts, but it was proving difficult. He tried his best to concentrate on the conversation, but it was so hard. He noticed the small things. The way her twirled, or the soft curve of Summer's mouth as she spoke. He held her fine hand in his, and stroked her fingers. It was all these small things that he missed doing...And then were others as well.Chuck Bass, control yourself! his mind shouted at him.
He listened more to her, and then she started asking the questions. Well, the town is great. People are really friendly. Job. Not talking about work tonight, he said with a small smile. His mind went into complete overdrive. It proved himself to be another man who couldn't control his own thoughts. He really needed to adjust to this. For months he had fallen a sleep with the same thoughts, mainly because he couldn't fall a sleep any other way. Is that so? he said with a grin. Can't wait to meet the new addition, he said truthfully. Great so now there was a dog in the works. How would that affect everything? Not that Chuck didn't mind dogs, but they could be troublesome in any plans that he had for the night.
He had ordered another Bourbon, a single this time, with a glass of water. Chuck savoured the taste before swallowing. So what are your plans for Christmas? Cause I got an invite for lunch from one of the band members, he said and asked. What he didn't mention was Melissa. There was going to be an interesting time and story.

She grinned at his answer. She was kinda pleased talk didn't stray to work, it wasn't something she really enjoyed doing. She realized her fingers had been slowly caressing the length of his fore arm. Her smirk was almost devil like. The tease inside her was definitely beginning to show once more. When he mentioned the new addition, she looked at him in confusion. Then she remembered she'd blurted something about getting Bear. The corners of her lips pulled down the slightest bit. Bear wasn't really a man's dog. He was fiercely protective of his new mistress. She couldn't help but wonder about the pair meeting, a slight gulp showed that it probably wouldn't be such a good thing. Banishing those thoughts away, she concentrated on Chuck once again. The cheeky smirk reappeared. Her hand ever so innocently slipped onto his thigh as he spoke again. She made it look like she hadn't even noticed. She watched as he ordered another drink and it was brought to the table. She was also offered another, but declined. She wasn't much of a drinker.
His words made her frown. Wasn't Christmas a while away yet? She looked around, and was surprised to see all of the decorations. "Is it already nearly Christmas?" she asked, her tone completely baffled. She thought it had only been mid November. Where had the time gone? Why hadn't she noticed all of the decorations everywhere. "My plans for Christmas are nothing. I had no idea it was so close." she said quietly, her expression slowly hardening. She could be a ditz at times. Her hand was still placed on his thigh, moving in slow but steady circles. Her thoughts of Christmas had left once again, all she saw was him. Her chair had edged closer, and once again her lips found his cheek. They slowly trailed down his jaw line and along his neck. Nobody was watching them, they were absorbed in their own conversations and antics. It helped that the pair were possibly in the farthest corner. She pulled away again, determined to drive him crazy. She sat back in her chair, a playful, knowing grin on her lips. She knew what she was able to do to him. She also knew that he wanted her just as much as she wanted him. Her lithe frame gave a shudder of pleasure at that thought. Her eyes flashed at him in her knowing way. "You know, we don't have to stay here.." she purred, her eyes glinting mischievously. "We could go back to my place." she offered. She was pretty sure he wouldn't pass up on that, but then again, Chuck could be a little unpredictable. Just to make sure, she leaned forward and placed a kiss on his lips. "My nice, cozy apartment." Her tones were husky now, oh lord she wasn't sure how much longer she could sit there and keep from leaping into his lap. They'd been away from each other way too long.

When you try your best but don’t succeedWhen you get what you want but not what you needWhen you feel so tired, but you can’t sleepStuck in reverse Every second, Chuck had to remind himself that there was a time and place for everything. The bar was definitely not the place for what he was planning to do to Summer. He had self-control at the best of times. He had self-control over his anger, and he had self-control over his words, but at that point in time he had no control over his thoughts. Never again was he leaving somewhere without her. His attention was drawn again when she spoke. “Yeah, it’s in a few days. Don’t worry. We can spend together if you want. Max and Melissa will be coming over on Christmas Eve,” Chuck said, before actually realising what he said. He had crossed the bridge twice over, and he wanted to kick himself in the mouth.
Summer dropped her hand casually onto his thigh, and he felt the slight shocks of electricity pulse down his spine. She hadn’t lost her touch in the months that they had been apart. She knew exactly what made him tick. If only they could spend every minute together, but there was that small rule at the College of no non-Campus staff allowed, unless it was an emergency.
He had felt the way she moved closer to him, and then he felt the light, tender kisses along his jaw. He closed his eyes and gave a slight shiver, not from the cold, but from pure pleasure. Chuck was glad for the hidden table in the back. Nobody noticed them, and they noticed no one. Oh, the restraint it was taking from him not to take her there immediately and fulfil his dark fantasies.
Being in England had made his vocabulary in some ways. Then Summer came up with the best proposition he had heard in a while. The band had started playing again, this time with another at the piano. Honestly, Chuck didn’t care, and he would rejoin them at a later stage. A mush later stage. “Your place sounds bloody good about now,” he said, his voice soft and husky. “The car’s out front,” he added, before lacing his fingers through hers, and pulling her from the seat. Reaching the front door, he put on his coat and scarf.
Chuck unlocked the car, but he knew that the anxious moments would have to wait with the ice slicked roads. “What about the dog?” he asked curiously. Knowing Summer, it wasn’t going to be toy poodle. His thoughts strayed to German Shepherds, Swiss Shepherds, Great Danes, and all other large dogs that he could think of.
