When you try your best but don’t succeedWhen you get what you want but not what you needWhen you feel so tired, but you can’t sleepStuck in reverse Chuck left the College, Melissa in the seat next to him. He was nervous that was for sure. There was no way that this was not going to go smoothly. He just hoped that the two would be civil to each other. Melissa and Summer that was. Their last meeting was anything...well, it had been bad. If only Max had come with, then it might have been okay. Max enjoyed his cousin's company and liked Summer well enough. Chuck's knuckles were white as he drove, unsure of how to handle his nerves. His reunion with Summer had been fantastic. He hadn't expected her to pitch up, and now she was here, and he couldn't spend enough time with her.
He had phoned her yesterday and asked to meet them at Milly's. Then it was to get Melissa to go. The method he used... He didn't tell either one that they were going to be there. For Melissa it was most likely just her and her dad. For Summer, he guessed, just him and her. Being devious ran in his blood.
The drive to town was playing on his nerves, but he and Melissa talked easily. So, how's Levi? he asked, wondering about the misproportioned gelding. Under her seat he had a late Christmas gift, one that he wanted to give her ages ago. The saddle pad with the Bass stable logo on it. The black pad had gold piping with the logo in silver on it.
Pulling up outside the cafe, he paused. Lissa, look under your seat, he said softly, hoping that she would like the saddle pad. He hadn't seen Summer yet which was good news, albeit for him.

Melissa rode along with her father, happily, easily, chatting about nothings gone past. When had been the last time she'd been out to eat a simple lunch with him? Years, it seemed. Such an amount of time was unacceptable, she decided, and mentally asked Luminescence to remind her in the future that this was now prohibated. The girl noticed how tense her father seemed. She always had a little bit of a gift when it came to deciphering him, or so she thought. She suddenly had a flashback of Summer in her mind, and how broken her father had seemed when Melissa had rejected her. Silently, she realized that today, lunch would not be him and her.
She had yet to tell her father of the ESP she must have gotten from her mother. The "gift" wasn't something you could control, or something you wanted the whole world to realize you had. She looked up as her dad mentioned Levi, smiling a little. "He's anxiously awaiting your approval." She replied, knowing that her father was used to top-notch competition horses, and that Levi was the farthest from such a mount. "Samba and he are good friends, but Sham simply can't stand them sometimes." She fiddled with the box she held in her lap, her father's Christmas gift. It was a Breyer horse she'd bought and customized with the assistance of one of her old art teachers a few months ago.
When they pulled into the restraunt, and Chuck had told her what to do, Melissa cocked her head at him slightly, but set the box down on the floorboard and pulled out the pad. She gasped at seeing it, grinning at him. "How did you know?" She asked, laughing out of pure happiness. She turned it over and then the Bass logo was staring up at her. The girl looked at it, stunned. She'd never owned anything with her family's name on it before, and holding the saddle pad, knowing it was meant for her, well. It felt like she may have just been accepted into the family."Thank you." She murmured, before she reached down and picked the box off the floor. "Your turn now." She told Chuck with a coy grin.

She was meeting Chuck for lunch, which meant that she was still at work. Afterwards, she'd have to go back. Her nails strummed in boredom against her desk, her oracles dancing around disinterestedly. She hadn't done much today, and she couldn't wait for Digger and Fable to come. Caroline, her boss, had given her permission to use the horses to ride around town, keeping an eye on things. Summer couldn't have been more pleased. But, until they came out of quarantine, she was stuck on foot. Just as she thought she was going to start gnawing her arm off in utter boredom, Caroline popped her head around the door. "You can go to lunch now Summer, just remember to get back by 2." she smiled warmly. Summer grinned back at her, glancing at the clock. Half an hour earlier than when she was supposed to go. "I've got Chloe coming in, she's demanding I make her costume for her Christmas concert." Caroline answered Summer's unasked question. Summer laughed, and nodded. She'd met the woman's granddaughter a couple of times, she really was a sweetheart. Waving goodbye to Caroline, she pulled on her black jacket with "Police" in large white lettering written on the back and left the station. The rest of her uniform consisted of black trousers, a white shirt and a black and white checked tie. She was supposed to wear a hat, but for lunch she decided to leave it in the office. She would have left the jacket too, if it wasn't so cold. She hated the uniform, but it was needed.
The woman walked leisurely toward Milly's, she felt that she'd be a little too early as it was. Her form cringed away from unwanted attention, she knew the uniform brought that to her. She wasn't fully on duty, but if trouble arose she'd have to be ready. Her hair was pulled up into a high ponytail, it bounced with every step she took. This enhanced her feminine features, and made her look much more innocent where as on some women it made them look harder, and much stronger. Summer wasn't one to be underestimated though, as some like to do. She'd been through enough to make her streetwise, and she had the ability to cut off all emotional ties with a person. This often worried her, she came a little too detached at times. With a sigh, she shot daggers at two men who strode past her. Both called out inappropriate comments, which made Summer's features harden. They looked at one another, grinning like two boys who'd just been given a new toy to play with. Before they could do any more though, she'd disappeared. They hadn't anticipated her speed, so muttered and carried on. With a little chuckle, she emerged from behind the ground of people as if nothing had happened, carrying on toward Milly's. As she grew nearer to the cafe, her thoughts strayed back to Chuck. Their reunion had easily been one of her top 5 nights, and since then they hadn't been separated much. But Melissa still played in her mind. She really wanted to get on with the girl, and hoped to bury the hatchet. She had nothing against her, she knew it must be hard to see her father grow close to another woman. Summer had been nothing but understanding, just because she knew she'd be the same if she were in Melissa's shoes.
The vixen turned the corner to the cafe, she scanned the parking lot. Chuck's vehicle easily stood out, and she gave a slight smile. As she walked closer, the outline of a smaller blonde female came into view. Melissa. Summer froze, she knew something had been up and should have expected it. Chuck was acting a little strange when he asked her to come. She didn't make any other movements toward the car, just stood there. She let her features relax though. If she wanted to get on Melissa's good side, she'd have to be a lot more friendly and open. Her arms hung loosely by her side, and she took a couple of steps back. She'd wait for them to see her before she walked over. They were obviously still doing something, or they would have gotten out of the vehicle. Her oracles wandered as she waited, grazing over the people who passed. Many smiled at her, no doubt because of her occupation. Not many people wanted to get on the bad side of a police woman, unlike those two idiots who thought because she was a woman she was a piece of meat to play with. Her oracles narrowed as she remembered the meeting. She was proud of herself for not rising to them, but she knew she should have said something. With a sigh, she rocked back on her heels and awaited for Chuck and Melissa to vacate the car.

When you try your best but don’t succeedWhen you get what you want but not what you needWhen you feel so tired, but you can’t sleepStuck in reverse Chuck watched as Melissa opened the gift. He was glad that she liked it, as it was something that he wanted to give her for months. Christmas just seemed the perfect time to do so. Then she gave him the box, and he gingerly opened it. Inside, under the tissue paper, was a statue of a horse. Perfectly formed and beautifully painted. He felt himself choke up slightly at the site, and he managed to get his words out. Thank you. I love it, he choked out. He knew the exact place for the horse. In his living room, on the mahoghany desk.
Placing the delicate horse back in the box, he glanced up and saw a very familiar jacket. So Summer was here, and it seemed that she already saw them. Oh brilliant, just the way he wanted to tell her. He had never really known Melissa's mother. She had been one of the first for him, and he had left before being able to getting to say goodbye. He hadn't even known about Melissa until her accident two years when she insisted on riding Smacks, a gelding that he had had.
Melissa, I actually asked Summer to join us today. It's important for me that you two get along, and I can't stand it knowing that one doesn't like the other, he said bluntly, stating the facts rather than beating around the bush. He opened his door and got out, walking to Melissa's door and opening it. Will you please go find us a table? he asked with a smile. He sent a quick prayer for this meeting to go well. It must, it just must.
Chuck then proceeded to walk to Summer, a grin already in place. There was really nothing that could top them reuniting on that night. I know you saw us already, he said softly to her when he reached her. He planted a soft kiss on her lips. He would have to wait for later, but he had Melissa waiting for them. He laced his fingers through hers and walked towards the door of the cafe. Chuck spotted Melissa and made his way towards the table. I'm going to start this from the beginning. Melissa this is Summer. Summer this is my daughter Melissa, he said, nervous glances darting between the two. Please let it go well.

EVERYONE THINKS THAT I HAVE IT ALLC A S T L E W A L L SBUT IT'S SO E M P T Y LIVING BEHIND THESE Melissa caught sight of Summer only seconds before Chuck told her that she would be joining them. He defenses were instantly thrown up; it was not that she hated the woman. She was scared of her, a fear that she knew was unrealistic, but the illogical side of her brain quavered at the thought of being abandoned. The child had never gotten a shred of parental love until Chuck. Sure, there was her stepfather, but he'd always be more of an uncle to her. Still, she raised her eyes and nodded slowly to Chuck, drawing herself into her shell to hide any emotion from him. She would be good. She would be calm and courteous.
She exited the vehicle, and made her way to the diner's front doors. Her step was cautious, her orbs casting wary glances, and her resigned form somehow seemed smaller than normal. She entered the restraunt and quickly got a table, a booth by the window. She felt a weight on her shoulders, and was reassured with Luminescence there to calm her down a bit. The fox said nothing, but licked her cheek for comfort. A shiver ran down Melissa's spine as she cast her eyes downward.
She made a decision then. It was time for her to quit being a needy child, and share. Summer could have Chuck all she wanted. Spencer and Jay could fill in for him when he was with his girlfriend. They were her friends after all, her best friends. And she had her horses, fox and dog. She could survive without Chuck for a while. She'd done it countless times before. So, the teenager pushed her true self down. Quirky Lissa was replaced with shy teenager, a role Melissa hated playing. But, her true self would scare Summer. No one would want to date a man who's daughter believed she had an imaginary fox, and believed in creatures that were dismissed as myths.
She heard the door jingle, and looked up, eyes wide in panic for the slightest second before she controlled herself. She gave Summer a smile when Chuck introduced her, holding out her hand. "Hello. It's very nice to meet you, Summer." She told the woman, but her tone was very quiet and shy, eyes cautious, hopeful that maybe she could make it up to this lady, whom she'd rejected so violently.
