David sat in A&E, swiveling his chair in utter boredom. Hardly anyone had come in today, he had no appointments so had taken to setting up camp at the hustle and bustle of the hospital. Of course, today wasn't the day. He had his head leaning far over the back of the chair, tempted to start whistling just for his own amusement. Two nurses walked by, casting a glance at him and then rolled their eyes at one another. He chuckled happily, sitting up a little straighter. Looking around, he wondered what he could do to pass the time. He was eying up the stapler, deciding whether or not to start stapling random notes to the wall, when suddenly the doors pushed open. Leaping to his feet, praising the lord for something finally happening, his expression fell into the professional, calm and collected one needed with all patients. It seemed to be a young boy, being wheeled in by a paramedic, an hysterical mother at his side. The boy looked far from fazed though. Dai detected a little pride in the tear stained face. He looked the boy up and down as he approached, and immediately knew what had happened. His ankle was twisted awkwardly, but he didn't think it was a break. The boy wouldn't have been grinning from ear to ear if it was. He was in a football kit, so the injury was sport related. Why didn't that surprise him? With a grin pulling at his lips, he finally reached the pair as the boy was lifted from the wheelchair and onto the bed by the paramedic. "Let me guess," were Dai's first words, his hand rubbing his chin as he thought. "Stood on the ball, trying to prove to your friends that you have amazing balance, slipped and fell." he grinned, meeting the eyes of the boy. He must have been about nine, ten at a push. The boy was still grinning, bordering laughter. The mother scolded him, but Dai just laughed. "Honestly, boys never change. My pair, both in their early thirties now, still act like idiots when it comes to football." he said to the mother, who smiled back at him. "Didcha win the game at least?" he asked the boy. As he did this, his hands were running gently along the boy's ankle. He pressed down every now and then, gaging the winces and gasps coming from the youngster. "No. Close though. 3-2." the boy offered, his expression still one of pride. Apparently loosing didn't matter too much to him, playing was the fun part.
Dai had the boy sent to X-Ray, just to make sure there wasn't anything out of the ordinary going on. Dai had diagnosed a sprain, a hairline fracture at the most. It would need to be strapped though, to support it as it healed. The boy was more than pleased, having evidence that he had been hurt. The fact that he got crutches made the boy ecstatic. David was smiling as he made his way over to the computer in the nurses bay, waiting for the x-ray's to come through. As he waited, he heard the noises of a familiar female. "Is it time for you to visit already?" he questioned, turning around and coming face to face with his granddaughter. A nurse stood behind her, her hand placed fondly on the girls shoulder. "Caroline just dropped her off, had to rush there was something going on at the station." she offered. Chloe was bouncing up and down on the spot, and then she climbed up onto David's lap when she heard the ping from the computer. "Is it broken? Is the bone sticking out of the leg?" she looked at her grandfather questioningly. He gave a hearty laugh, ruffling her hair. She'd grown accustom to the noises around the hospital, knowing what each one meant by now. "No no, nothing to worry about so it seems. Just a sprain." he told her after inspecting the X-Rays. The boy was now being wheeled back into A&E, and he told one of the nurses to take him to plaster. She nodded, giving Chloe one more fond pat, and then went off with the boy. His mother thanked David as did the boy, and David nodded in return. Watching them leave, he then turned his attention back to Chloe. "How was school then my dear Chloe?" he questioned, picking her up so he could carry her up to his office.
The walk up was filled with Chloe's nattering's about the day's events. "Ooh, Grandma has to come to school next week. It's about traffic safety and she's doing a presentation thingy about it." she concluded her story. David nodded, he'd already been informed of this. They were now at the office, and David was putting down the girl gently. She immediately made a beeline for the large, black chair that sat behind his desk. Smirking, he took the seat in front of it. Turning his laptop around, he put on her favorite website and turned it back toward her. She clicked enthusiastically on one of the games, and quickly became absorbed. David was pleased, he had paper work to attend to anyway. Standing, he went over to the filing cabinet and pulled out the papers he'd been working on this morning. His handwriting was neat, he started up quickly as he signed various documents and added his own notes. A nurse disturbed them briefly, telling David that the boy he'd seen not long ago had now gone home. David nodded, and then looked up and caught the time. "Cafeteria, sweet pea?" he questioned Chloe, who looked up from her game and nodded earnestly. Standing, he offered her hand out for her to hold and they made their way down to the cafeteria.
