Callum ran his hand over Kinghship's neck one last time before gathering up his courage and leading the horse out of the stable. The large gelding was a fair bit taller than he was used to, Champagne had been several inches smaller and dear little Wallflower was a 14.2hh pony. This would be his first ride on Kingship, and so far the tacking up hadn't gone too badly. Jemma had already warned him that the horse could be a little pushy in the stable, and although he found this to be true, Kingship settled down quickly with a stern word. He forced a small smile onto his face. Callum was genuinely excited about bonding with King, but he found himself anxious about how the partnership would work out.
Sighing, he led King over to the mounting block just outside the yard and gently sat onto the horse's back. His tall frame relaxed almost instantly as he got used to the feel of the horse, to him it was the most comfortable place in the world. His legs applied the gentlest of pressures to King's side, Callum wasn't sure how much the horse would require to move off in a walk, and in this case not enough is certainly better than too much. The Selle Francais responded easily, going into a calm yet alert walk. Callum chuckled - relaxing himself further - as he pictured himself as a youngster careering around on a little pony he used to ride. "None of that today I don't think King." He smiled as they made their way to the start of the trails. He'd already arranged to meet Jemma there to go on a trail ride. The thought made him roll his shoulders, checking the rucksack was still secured on his back. Grinning, he half-halted the black horse underneath him and looked around for Jemma. From the stable yard he could see a horse and rider emerging and he guessed it was her. This only made the smile on his face grow, but his joyful expression was tinged with worry for his girlfriend. The loss of her sister had been horrible enough, but he imagined it surfaced old memories about the loss of her mother too. He shook the thoughts from his mind. The aim for today was to be the supportive boyfriend if she wanted to talk about, but if she didn't then the aim was to give her an awesome day to distract her mind from painful thoughts and keep them - if only temporarily - on the happy day.
King shook his head up and down, impatient to get started as Jemma and her horse drew nearer. Callum murmured a soft word to the horse before he raised his hand in greeting to Jemma. Smiling, his eyes searched her face to try and grasp how she was feeling.

A black stetson shaded the blank eyes. Deerskin gloves covered the fragile fingers. Cowboy boots beat the path towards the stables. Leading a black gelding, she wanted to curl up in a small ball, and watch as the pieces of her shattered heart fell around her. Eyes were shadowed with deep purple circles, remains of the sleepless nights that were always there. The nightmares showed her every facet of her mother's accident, and sometimes her sister's as well. A soft muscle pressed into her neck, and breathed warm air, tickling the sensitive skin.
Jemma allowed Sherlock to comfort her. Today would be the first time that she would actually be riding the gelding, but she would be using no tack, but a simple neck string. She had spent months building their bond, and she trusted the horse to carry her safely. Slipping the cord around his neck, a large, intelligent, brown eye looked at her, and blinked it's acceptance. Rubbing her hands over the horses back, she vaulted easily onto the gelding. He waited patiently until she gave the signal to walk.
Jemma was meeting Callum by the trails, and for once she hoped that she would be able to enjoy herself. He had been there for her throughout the ordeal, and she was thankful for his support. Riding at an active walk, Jemma soon saw the black gelding that she had given him. The pair suited each other, and a ghost of a smile crossed her features. A sense of peace washed over her, and she relaxed, knowing that the time ahead would be difficult, but everything was going to be fine. Her features held only a small smile that she had returned for Callum, before it disappeared completely. It was hard to smile these days, and it was at very little that she did so.

Callum was somewhat reassured by Jemma's smile, but he could see the effort it had taken to place it there. A silent sigh passed his lips, he wished there was something he could do that would make everything better, the male hated not being able to do anything. Callum couldn't really empathize with Jemma's situation, he was an only child and both of his parents were still alive and well. Sometimes he tried to put himself in her shoes, but he had concluded the best thing to do was just to try and give her some happy times.
"You ready to go?" he turned and spoke in his quiet vocals. King was getting impatient, and he allowed him to walk forwards down the trail slowly. The first part of the trail was wide, and they would be able to ride alongside each other for a while. His hand gestured to the space next to him - King didn't seem bothered by Sherlock but Sherlock might not want to be next to King. A few moments passed in silence before Callum spoke again. "When are you going back home? Are you waiting until the Christmas break starts?" His eyes glanced at her face again as he spoke. When the girl responded, he offered a small smile and a comment. "Would you like me to look after Sherlock and co.?" He didn't know Sherlock that well, but he was friends with the girl's other horses and it wouldn't bother him to care for them alongside his own.
When his eyes flickered back to the trail, he noticed it getting narrower. From his rides out with Wallflower he knew that the wide clearing he was heading for was just past this bit. "Do you want to try going faster?" the words slipped out of the male's mouth as he pulled ahead slightly to give Jemma and Sherlock some room. He grinned at the thought of testing King's speed, the horse had behaved immaculately so far. The male respected the Sherlock might not be ready for that though, so he gently half-halted King. The gelding seemed to know Callum was considering going faster.

Sherlock's ears were pricked forward. The horse seemed alert, and ready to go, and so was Jemma. Today would the one day that she would enjoy herself. The smile came easier this time, and she nodded at the question. Sherlock also seemed rearing to go, and she knew that today would be a great day. The gelding seemed dwarfed by King, but any horse would. For a stride or two, Sherlock seemed to seize up, and panic in his surroundings, but calmed down easily. He gave a big sigh, and lowered his head. The neck string wasn't constricting him, and with no saddle, Jemma could anticipate his movements.
Callum spoke up again. This time asking about holidays, and home. I'm flying out in two days with dad and Jason. Peter and Grandpa will be meeting us at the airport. I'll only be back after term starts again however. I'll appreciate it. Spartan will need some good exercise, if you don't mind riding him. DJ just needs to be chased around the round pen. Sherlock here will be fine without exercise, she said. It was the most that she had spoken in a while, and she was surprised that she still had a voice. Up ahead, Jemma saw the trail beginning to narrow slightly. Sherlock wanted to run, she could feel it.
Okay. I think King should go out in front. His stride is longer than Sherlock's, she answered his question eagerly. Jemma waited while King and Callum picked up speed. When they had pulled ahead a distance, she signaled Sherlock to pick up the pace. Grabbing a chuck of mane, Sherlock galloped gamely, enjoying the speed. Jemma kept her seat easily, and she let out a whoop of excitement. A broad grin spread easily across her face, and her stetson popped off her head. If it wasn't for the piggin' strings, then she would have had to go hunt for it later.
Sherlock caught up easily to King, and gave a buck to signal his happiness. Finally she had locked the horses unhappiness away. Sherlock was back.

The male took in Jemma's words silently, his eyes focusing on Sherlock and the trail ahead. King was still walking smoothly, and his fingers toyed with the gelding's pulled mane. A faint smile spread across his face. Despite the fact he would miss Jemma, it would be good for her to spend time with her family. For a second he considered offering the go with her, but it was a time to be with family, he had comforted her as much as he could here. "Okay, is your dad picking you up from college or can I give you a lift to the airport if you'd like." The suggestion came out lightly, but in reality he would love to be able to go and see her off. Callum thought over each of the exercise her horses would need. "That's fine. I haven't ridden Spartan in ages." A true grin lit his face for a few moments, he got on well with Jemma's gelding, having bonded with him when he first got to know Jemma.
Receiving Jemma's agreement, he pushed King forwards gently, starting off in a canter and letting him soon build up to a slow gallop. The Selle Francais' long stride ate up the ground quickly, and Callum laughed as he recalled his words to the horse early, that they wouldn't be careering around. The male was still chuckling as he slowed King down, the gelding offered a little resistance and a small buck in excitement but he soon calmed enough to respond to Callum's soft aids. He was pleased with the speed the horse showed, and decided he would take him out onto the sand track to let him run full speed soon. Turning his body in the saddle he glanced at Jemma. The male motioned to the bag on his back as he started to speak. "Should we let these guys have a breather? I have something resembling a picnic." He smiled whilst he spoke, this was how a date ought to be. The more gentlemanly side in him wanted to take his girlfriend to the restaurant in town, but taking the horses out had appealed more to him, and he guessed it would be the same for her.

Jemma smiled at Callum's offer. She would love having him see her off, and Jason was going with dad in anyway. It also meant that she would be able to spend a few more minutes with Callum. I'd love having you drop me off, she replied, a grin on her face. Lou always said that she would be arranging Callum and Jemma's wedding. Jemma always shook it off, and if there was a pillow in the vicinity, she would throw it.
As the two galloped, Sherlock's stride was smooth and elastic. Callum always knew how to cheer her up, and the fact that he had packed a picnic was a bonus. Sure, she said. She slipped off her black gelding's back, and he followed her automatically, and he pushed his head softly between her shoulder blades. Jemma signaled him off, and Sherlock tossed his head, and trotted off towards an area of longish grass. I'm going to miss you, she said, while she waited for Callum, and it was the truth. It wasn't going to feel the same without him. He was one of the family in any case.

The male nodded as she accepted his offer to take her down to the airport. Callum's eyes lit up as he watched a grin on her face, exactly the thing he had been hoping to see today. His eyes flickered, observing her connection with her mount. He never failed to be amazed at Jemma's work with her horses. Sure, his horses had had some behavioral issues - in particular Champagne at the beginning of their time together - but none had really had the serious mental issues that Jemma managed to work through. His love for the girl often went unstated, he had a tendancy to awkwardly stumble through any such declarations and his shy side instinctively avoided them. His plan though, if he followed through with it, would probably change that.
He bent his knees as he landed on the ground from King, offering the horse a rub between his large, trusting eyes. Sherlock was loose, but he didn't have any tack to worry about. Callum grabbed a headcollar and lead from his rucksack and slipped it over the top of the large gelding's bridle, securing him to a tree with enough length for him to munch on the grass. He loosened the girth and knotted the reins so the equine couldn't get himself tangled before turning towards Jemma. Her words tugged at his heart and he pondered once again about going with her. Once again though, he concluded she needed her relatives for this though, and he could support her inbetween. Something which he planned to do, in his own gentlemanly way. "I'll miss you too." The words slipped from his lips as he approached her, pulling her into a hug against his chest. When he'd finished the embrace, he stepped back and ducked his head - flushed with red - into the bag to pull out a typically English tartan picnick blanket and the food. Setting it out, he sat down and gestured for Jemma to do the same. As he pulled out the last bit of food, his fingers brushed against a small, softly-covered box and he slipped it into his pocket.
"Jemma," he started nervously when she was seated, his eyes on the ground. "I know this is probably the wrong time." he hesitated again, but let his gaze settle on her as he changed positions on the blanket. "Would you consider giving me the honor of being able to call myself your husband?"His eyes searched her's as he waited for a response, fearful he had done exactly the wrong thing. The small box was being turned round and round in his hand, still hidden inside his pocket.

Jemma waited as Callum finished off with King. The large gelding was a gentle giant, and it was sweet to see the bond that the pair had developed. She then turned her gaze on Sherlock who looked every image of peace that she could think of. The gelding had come far, and she loved that he was happy in his surroundings. She wondered if he'll ever be a competition horse, but even if he wasn't then she would be quite happy for him to be a pasture companion.
As Callum pulled her into a hug, she wrapped her own arms around his waist loosely, and breathed in his warm scent. It was familiar and comforting. She stored it away, hoping that she would remember it. As Callum picked up the blanket, and set up the picnic, she raised an eyebrow, an amused expression on her face. Callum always seemed to blush when he did that. It was really too cute! Seating herself, she failed to notice the small movement from Callum, her mind was on other things. She was excited to see her family again, but she was also sad to leave Callum behind.
Callum drew her attention however, and she watched him intently. There was obviously something he was trying to say, and when he finished she carried on staring. The words hadn't settled in yet. Marry? Get married? was all she thought. Her mouth popped into a small 'o'. Yes, she said a little hesitantly, before finding the right words. Yes! I will marry you! she said, and a huge grin broke onto her face. Lou's prediction had come true, and it was going to happen, but that left one thing. You're gonna have to come with now. I think it's going to be easier to tell Dad, Grandpa, and Peter if they're all together, she said, already seeing the image in front of her.
Her father will be shell shocked, her grandfather would say shrug and accept it, and Peter would welcome Callum officially into the family as a brother in law. Oh Lord. I need Lisa for this one, she thought.

Callum watched, anxious as he saw surprise on Jemma's face. Well, it was fair enough to expect surprise. He hadn't exactly given her any warning. He was still worried when she began to speak though, but uncontainable joy lit up his face as she said yes. She'd agreed. He was actually engaged. To Jemma. He was going to get married. To Jemma. His thoughts were stilted, disbelief that she had actually agreed. He resisted the urge to whisper 'I'm getting married', but he pulled out the little box from his pocket and opened the catch, flicking up the lid. He offered it out towards Jemma, a small ring nestled inside. The ring itself was a delicate silver, two bands joining as one at the back of the ring, and each joining to the upper body of a horse. The horse had small pieces of diamond in it's mane, making it glitter in the pale sun light.
Jemma's offer to come out to America with her surprised him - about the only thing that could currently. He nodded his agreement instantly, taking a moment to put his thoughts into words. "Okay. How will they react?" A hint of nervousness was noticeable in his voice. To him, all that mattered was Jemma, but if her family objected, then it would bother his girlfriend. Fiance, he corrected himself with a smile. He suddenly felt overwhelmed and turned to watch King for a moment. The horse was a gift from Jemma's father, and he knew that the male accepted him as his daugher's boyfriend, but even last time he had seen him her father had still seemed concerned about their relationship. Would this make it worse? In-laws, he wondered. Something else new. He'd met some of Jemma's family before, but he still hadn't met everyone.
Thinking of family made him consider his own parents. He didn't really talk to them anymore, not because of an argument but they had just drifted apart when he went to Blue Ridge. He never really got on with them well, since his teenage years started he'd always felt like more of a lodger in his own home. In fact, he'd not actually told them he was back in England. He sighed at the thought of explaining everything to them, wondering if he'd even informed them about Jemma when they still communicated occasionally during his early days at the academy. Callum would have to tell them the news though. Last he'd heard they had moved house in his last year at Blue Ridge almost three years ago, an old friend had informed him a while back but his parents had never contacted him with a new address. Shaking off the thoughts, he turned back to Jemma, a sudden urge filling him to hug the girl again.

Jemma still couldn't believe that she was getting married. To Callum. The one that supported her through everything, who was always there for her. Who would be her husband. She actually did wonder how her family would react, but that would be another concern. Grandpa will be fine with it. Don't let his gruffness get to you, he was worse with Peter. Dad might just have a coronary, but won't play the bad guy. He doesn't like being worse than grandpa. Peter will welcome you as a brother. Lisa will keep the calm. I'm not sure if Sue is going to be there, she answered with a smile.
The ring itself was something that she simply adored. It seemed to bring everything together, and the horse was just perfect. She gave her hand for him to slip on the ring, and as he did, she watched the diamonds sparkle in the sunlight. It's perfect. Thank you, she whispered. She knew about her family, but what about Callum's? They had hardly bought up the topic, and she wondered if it was right to do so.
Sherlock ambled over, and snuffled Jemma's head. She rubbed his cheek, the euphoria still running through her. I guess I have to inform my dad you coming with, she said with a smile, knowing that her dad would be able to pull a few strings to get Callum a ticket. She didn't pull out her phone just yet, rather leaving it. She leaned into Callum's chest, and was content to stay there.

Callum couldn't have removed the delighted smile from his features if he tried, and to be fair he didn't really want to. Jemma as his wife was something which he had started imagining more recently, but the idea of being with her for the rest of his life had developed soon after they first met. He couldn't really imagine it any other way. The two years they had spent apart had quickly been put behind them once they were together again at Park, and he was glad for that. Being near Jemma but not with her would have been unbearable for the male, and it had shown him how much he truly felt for her. The female's words explaining her family's reaction were greeted with a nod. The shock of what he'd done, and the fact Jemma had accepted - more than he could ever of expected - was just settling over him and he wasn't sure if he was capable of speech. He'd only met Jemma's father out of her extended family, but the male was actually looking forwards to meeting the rest. That rather surprised him, he tended to avoid awkward family situations like the plague. But these were Jemma's family and they mattered to her so they immediately mattered to him.
The grin managed to grow wider as Jemma allowed him to slip the ring onto her finger. "Your welcome." The instinctive manners slipped out as she thanked him for the ring and he took her into his arms again for a wide hug. The ring reminded him he would need to buy another now, a wedding ring. And planning for the wedding. Would Jemma want to do it all? Or her family? He had no idea and guessed it would be something to talk about later. He knew Jemma had mentioned before that her sister had liked to tease her saying she would plan the wedding. The thought died off as he moved back - Sherlock had wandered over. Callum turned his attention to his own horse, still tied on the other side of the little clearing. The large gelding had his head up, watching the goings on as though they were much more interesting than the greenery at his feet. The wisps of grass sticking out the side of his mouth gave the horse away though, and Callum chuckled at the scene. "I guess. Will you tell him why then, or are we keeping it a secret til we're in America?" He spoke gently, but his tongue tie seemed to have vanished. The idea of a secret appealed to his mischevious side, but he was unsure if Jemma would be able to hold it in around her father. Not to mention the fact Callum wanted to share it with the whole world.
The speak of telling family made him again think of his own. Perhaps he could call up so old friends tonight and try and find contact information for his parents. Himself and Jemma could go and visit them after they returned from their trip if she wanted, or just let them know by a letter or phone call. He pondered about, deciding to bring it up with his girlfriend. Fiance, he corrected once again. "What about my family? Do you want to meet them?" He hesitated, imagining her answer to be along the lines of 'only if you want to...'. "I haven't seen them in a few years, but they used to live not far from here. If I can find out where they are, we could go tomorrow if you want." He drew to silence, not really knowing what more to say. Callum was aware he'd never spoken much of his family with Jemma, or anyone else for that matter. Since he lost contact with them, he could truthfully say he hadn't missed his parents. Sure, nothing bad had ever happened between them, but they'd never been a particularly close family anyway. Regardless, he would go with what his girlfriend wanted on this one. Fiance. Now that will take some getting used to, he thought to himself.

Jemma listened to Callum's question, then thought about it. Her dad would now the difference in her, but wouldn't be able to place a finger on it. Jason might be able to guess. Overall she would feel better if they waited until they were in the States, mainly to get it over and done with as soon as possible, before the planning started. She knew that she would need Lisa's help in the arrangements, but she couldn't help feeling that Lou would have been the right person for the job. What would her sister have said? I think we should only tell our friends first, but leave telling the family until we are there, she answered, noting the mischievous glint in her fiance's eyes. It would still take some getting used to say that without being giddy with happiness.
Jemma ran a hand through her hair, and watched Callum. He had spoken about his family, and once more she remained thoughful for a while. She had never met his family, and would love to do so. She just didn't know how to say yes, and she didn't know how it would affect him. Callum had been her world for so long. The day that they met had been something magical, and the day when he kissed her for the first time, she knew that he was the one. She wasn't just saying that, but she had known it to be true. I'd love to meet them. We aren't leaving until late tomorrow evening, so we have time, she said gently.
Her eye caught the ring again, and she smiled. Jemma now knew what Lou had felt like when she had gotten engaged to Peter. It was the happiest day of her life, sitting in that meadow with Callum and the horses. The man she loved and the animals she loved. It was happiness, and it was just amazing.

He waited quietly for Jemma's response, wondering if her could guess her answer. She wouldn't be able to completely keep it under wraps, he mused, but would her sense of praticality mean she wanted to wait until everyone was together? He grinned as she replied, nodding his agreement. That was fine by him. He didn't really have any firm friends at the college, his spare time was spent with Jemma. But there were a couple of old friends he wouldn't mind sharing the news with. Callum decided he would hold off that until he'd been to see his parents though, they probably wouldn't be impressed hearing it second hand.
The words about his parents sounded reasonable coming from Jemma and he smiled in response to her gentle tone. She'd clearly taken her time to think it over logically, and he trusted her judgement, at time better than he trusted his own. "Okay. I'll try and get hold of them tonight and let them know. " He drifted off, leaving the subject smoothly. It wasn't that he was against talking about his family, he just didn't know what to say. His family were pretty normal, a friendly couple living in a rural area of England. Callum had just always felt detached from them, as though he wasn't quite part of their little group. It occured to him anything could of happened in the years since he'd been in contact with them - they could even have had another child. He pushed the thought out of his mind, they would have told him something like that, he was sure. Whatever the felt towards him, it wasn't cruelty and they wouldn't leave him that much out of the loop.
His eyes watched Jemma as she drifted into her own thoughts, allowing his mind to do the same. Glancing down at his watch, he decided they'd probably best be getting back. It was still getting dark quite early and somehow the cover of the trees didn't make for a good moonlit ride. Now that was an idea of how to have a wedding he chuckled to himself. Grinning, he brushed the dirt off that had accumulated on his legs and started to stand up. "It'll be getting dark in less than an hour, we should get started on the way back." He offered his hand out to help her up, wondering if she would take it or ignore it on principal. Callum smiled at the thought of the ride back, he'd completely forgotten it was his first ride on King. The horse had behaved so nicely coming out here, he couldn't wait to have some fun on the way back.

Jemma nodded as he answered her, knowing that it might be awkward for him to suddenly contact people he hadn't spoke to in a while. Hearing Callum speak again, she looked up. I guess we should, she answered with a small smile. Reaching for his hand, she pulled herself up with his help and pulled her gloves back on before dusting herself off. Placing her stetson back on, she whistled quietly to Sherlock who came ambling over. Jemma fussed over him, and gave him a quick kiss on his velvety soft muzzle. Grabbing a hunk of mane, she pulled herself onto the warm black back, waiting for Callum to finish with King.
The day was beginning to come to a close, but oh what a day it had been. Now she was actually starting to see the cracks in her heart starting to glue themselves together, and she knew that she would be fine. Nothing was going to go wrong, and she was going to spend the rest of her life with the one she loved. She had never felt that before, resolution of the future. Her mother had taught her patience, Lou had taught her integrity, and Callum, well, he had been her rock.
You ready? she asked, a playful glint in her eyes. Looking towards Callum she urged Sherlock into a trot, slow enough for King to catch up, but for once she felt something different in Sherlock. He wanted to play, and play he would if he was given the chance. Today was a day of firsts.
