*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Luke led the placid gelding out toward the pasture, Riley every now and then snorting a soft greeting to those he passed. The humans smiled back at the gelding and his owner, and the horses returned the greeting whether it be enthusiastically or not. Riley was a little tired, Luke had just been working him in the round pen as the Hackney cross Clydesdale had been a little excited this morning when he'd come into the barn. He'd actually spent the night there with Jason, though he hadn't slept, and had just popped back to his room for a shower. Both himself and Jason were insomniacs, so neither rarely slept. But Luke was still wound up like a spinning top, and could still not keep still. Riley looked at his owner peculiarly as he danced around as the large brute paused to graze on some particularly appetizing grass. Luke rolled his eyes and then started walking again when the bay was ready. At 26, Riley liked to take things at his own pace. Much like his older brother George, who was 31. Both could be very slow when they wanted to be, and apparently Riley wanted to do just that right now. They finally reached the pasture and Luke let them both inside. Three heads raised, and two forms then began to come over to greet the pair. Jason and George both walked leisurely over to Luke and Riley, where as Valerie held back, a mischievous expression passing over her delicate features. Luke undid the head collar on Riley, and set the large horse on his way. He gave the other two geldings a pat and then began to walk toward Valerie, who was obviously plotting against being caught.
Luke had every intention of catching the pretty mare and taking her for a ride on the trails. As soon as she was caught, she would be fine. But until then, he had a challenge on his hands. They stood about 4 feet away from one another, daring the other to come closer. Valerie looked around hesitantly, losing her will to keep away from him. Taking a hesitant step forward, she then did a little charge toward him to try and intimidate him. He didn't budge and correctly assumed that she would skid to a halt in front of him. Looking a little offended, she held her cranium in an arrogant manner to make it difficult to put the head collar onto her. He did so, and then began to lead her from the field, pushing his way through the three crowded geldings. She was now following faithfully, reaching up to lip at his lengthy locks that curled at the base of his neck. "Get off you silly mare." he laughed, pushing away her maw and then led her into the yard and toward her stall. He tied her up outside of it, knowing that she would become too lethargic if he put her inside it, and pat her shoulder affectionately. "I'll be back in a second sweetheart, try not to get up to too much trouble." he told her, before setting off to walk to the tack room. He opened the door and groped for the light on the wall. Finding it, he switched it on and collected Valerie's tack before leaving once again.
He tacked her up quickly, she was good when it came to that. Getting on her was another thing. They started some sort of complex dance, her darting to the side every time she got near, and then all of a sudden swinging around. He was getting a little annoyed, and it showed in his oracles. They were quickly approaching black in shade. She seemed to notice this and then fell still. He mounted her in silence and then adjusted the girth so it was a little tighter. Coaxing her into a walk, they were soon heading out onto the sand track. The aim of this ride was to wear out the spirited Valerie. Otherwise she grew bored easily, and began to annoy the geldings mercilessly. She was much more intelligent than the other three, and usually is was Jason that fell victim to her antics, not that he really minded. But Luke was looking forward to having a calm youngster to handle for once, instead of the highly strung, opinionated thing she usually was. It didn't take them long to get to the track, and already the mare was on her toes. She pranced eagerly as he kept her at a walk, desperate to take off. He didn't allow it though, and she obediently obliged. There was the obvious excitement radiating from her though. It was hard to believe that she'd not long being broken. The young mare charged at things head on, she was fearless in the way she approached things. This was making it an easy job for Luke to work with her, she was more than willing to do things. But it also had its disadvantages, Valerie was certain that she knew best and challenged Luke for Alpha position on many occasions. She was slowly settling into her place, but the battle was by no means over yet.
Valerie had calmed considerably by now, the Mustang cross Paint mare was walking calmly, though her audits flickered in anticipation. It was a warm day, it surprised him for this time of year. The sun bounced off his steed's pretty palomino pelt, enhancing the white markings she also possessed. There was no denying that Valerie was a beautiful horse, she oozed elegance but it was obvious that she was a free spirit like her Mustang ancestors. That free spirit was starting to raise it's head again, and she began to get antsy beneath him. This time he gave in, all it took was a slight dig in of his heels and she was off. He sat deep in the saddle, and his form was rigid in posture. But there was excitement written all over his handsome face, and he couldn't help but whoop because of it. Valerie took this as a sign to go faster. They were pushing a gallop, but he kept enough control to keep her from going too fast. They kept up the speed for a good ten minutes, before Valerie's breathing became a little heavier. Slowing to an eventual walk, Luke leaned down to pat her neck. "Good girl." he cooed, earning a gentle snort from her. They continued in a gentle walk, but Valerie was already beginning to get excited once again. Rolling his eyes, he let the reins slack as she slowly, but surely, regained her breath. This was going to be a long day, she never tired easily.
