Matt smiled as he waved goodbye to a man from the town who had just brought his horse in for vaccinations. It was a pretty routine thing to do, but they had had an interesting discussion about the merits of different types of tack. That was probably one of the things he loved most about his job, alongside actually helping the horses and being able to teach people. His next customer was due to arrive in ten minutes, a mare due to foal in the next week or two, but the owner had a busy job and wanted her precious horse to be with the vet when she foaled. Matt would just be giving her a check up and then helping the owner settle her in. The other thing happening in the next few minutes would be the first visit of his assistants - two of the students from the college. He didn't know that much about the girls who had offered, Jemma was in his Equine Reproduction class so he recognized the name and knew a little about her, but not in the sense of what she knew vet wise. Cara was in the class too, and seemed very knowledgeable and polite when her mare was foaling.
Matt hurried down to the barn where any horses staying with him were stabled, and the horses here for rehabilitation were stabled in this barn too. Matt wasn't responsible for the veterinary care of those horses though, the rehabilitation woman, Demeter Carr, was a qualified vet and the horses knew her better anyway. He only helped with those when asked, so his side of the barn was refreshingly empty. At his old practice, an empty barn had been a worry, horses who had to stay were the biggest earner for him. Here though, the college paid him a set salary to be responsible for any horses kept with or owned by them, and that was enough to live off. The town customers were a bonus. Well, he thought as two high-pitched neighs rang around the barn - not totally empty. His two Falabella's lived in this barn as it was much easier than keeping them down in the staff barn. Ring was his little mare, due to foal next week too. His miniature stallion, Reflect, danced around his stall. The two shared what was officially one stable, but Matt had installed an extra door and put a partition that reached his waist to divide it into two halves. The stables in this barn were all very roomy, often containing anxious or foaling horses that could do with extra space. The doors were full height, but there was a barred window at Falabella head height looking out into the aisle in each half. Holding out his open hands towards each head to show he had no treats, he double-checked the stable where the new arrival would be staying. As he came back past his duo, they each received a pinch of grated carrot from his pocket and he chuckled as their eyes lit up and ears pricked forwards. Still grinning, he made his way back to the clinic to meet the students and wait for the mare to arrive.

Jemma put on her black stetson and zipped up her light jacket, before leaving the dorm. She was about to start working as an assistant to the equine vet, and she was actually excited. She decided to sign up for the job, as she had felt with her knowledge of natural remedies needed to be broadened with the more generic ideas of treating horses. What she wondered though is if Mr. Harman would accept her more natural ways of working with horses. Scott, the small animal vet, had often treated her horses, and was in fact a prodigy of her mother. Jemma often thought about her mom, especially when working with horses, and she wondered how life would have been with her around.
The vet barn was pretty empty when Jemma reached it. Her cowboy boots clicked on the concrete floor, and a small bout of nerves hit her. She went to the clinic and found Mr. Harman. Hello sir, she said quietly with a small smile. She had the instinctive feeling that the experience will be good for her, even though she had decided that the family ranch would be her future, though the future would change with any given happening.

Matt frowned slightly as his phone started to ring, the Crazy Frog tune that he had never got round to changing it from. Answering it, he found it to be the woman bringing the mare. She would be twenty minutes or so late, having been delayed at work. As he wished her a safe journey and returned the phone to the pocket of his jeans, he thought it might actually be a good thing. It would give him time to show Jemma around and quiz her on what she knew. He chuckled at the thought, realizing that sounded seriously scary. Just ask her a couple of questions and find out if she knows nothing or a decent amount, he corrected himself with a grin.
As Jemma approached him and greeted him politely, he smiled. "Hi Jemma. Sir is fine for the classroom, but here I'm Matt if that's okay. His eyes twinkled slightly as he spoke, knowing he never really asked his students to call him Sir, and that to be honest, even Mr. Harman was more polite than he needed. The students here were all around 18 years old, certainly adults. "So Jemma, how much do you know about veterinary stuff? And I suppose I better give you a quick tour." He gestured around himself as he spoke. "This is the clinic, pretty much where any horses that come in get treated," he beckoned for her to follow as he moved outside through the human only exit. "That's the barn and paddocks for any horses staying here, and Ms. Carr's rescue horses," once again his arms moved as he spoke, pointing out the various features. "And down there," he pointed to a smart looking building, "is our rather amazing Rehabilitation Center which has loads of cool gadgets. He grinned as he finished speaking, glancing at Jemma to see her thoughts. "Oh and we have a pregnant mare arriving for a check up in about ten minutes, and she is a temporary resident in the barn too."

Jemma knew that she would most likely end up calling Matt, sir again, but it was a habit that had been ingrained in her from a young age. It didn't stop her from speaking her mind every so often. Okay Matt, she said, the name sounding strange on her tongue. She walked next to him and waited until he had finished showing her around before speaking. I've never really had much experience with modern veterinary practices. My practice lies with natural herbs and remedies, as well as techniques. My mom taught me from a young age that a horse would chose it's own remedy in the case of aromatherapy. They know what is good for them. After her death two years ago, I took over the ranch for a while. We rehabilitated horses that were abused or needed "help". The remedies did what generic medicine sometimes couldn't do. I must admit though, that in emergencies we did call out a vet. I'm eager to learn about modern day practices.
The speech was a long one for Jemma, as she almost never talked that much. To people she did know, she almost couldn't stop babbling. A pregnant mare. Now that was something to look forward to, but night watch was already playing with her sleeping patterns.

Cara was walking down the barn that housed the rescue horses, she spent a little time with each of them and gave them a treat before moving on. The mare she worked with still lived outside as she seemed happier out there. The girl could now handle Risk and the mare would walk around with her, but being inside make the mare skittish, so she remained out. Thankfully she had a nice box, and as the girl could handle her, she also wore a thick winter rug to protect her from the chill in the air.
The teen looked up when she heard the sound of voices and knew that it was time for her to head through to the other barn where her job as a vet assistant was due to start. She knew that the vet was the teacher of the reproduction class, so they already knew each other - kind of, sort of - but she was still slightly hesitant about walking through to the other barn. She was free of the grasp of Tony Andrews, but how he had shaped her past had left a lasting effect on the girl.
She stepped away from the horses and clenched her fists as a shiver ran through her body. She was dressed in beige jodhpurs - as the snow showed up on her black ones and made them look dirty - and long riding boots to protect her legs from the muddy grounds. Her hair was pulled back in a french braid and wound into a bun.
Once she had once more gained control of her emotions, she walked to the door and headed toward the sounds of the voices.

Matt smiled at Jemma's speech and started to walk down towards the stables. "Wow, that sounds pretty interesting. I've always liked the idea of alternative treatments, but I've never had the time or opportunity to really learn about them." He paused to take a breath, a twinkle lighting in his eye as he continued. "How about I teach you my knowledge, if you teach me yours?" He smiled, it really was something he wanted to learn about. So many people took great pride in the methods, and if it helped horses, then he couldn't ignore it.
Gesturing to the barn he explained his reasoning for going there. "From what you've told me I guess you've visited this barn already with Ms. Carr? I keep my two Falabella's here and this is where the mare will be staying for the next couple of weeks." As he entered the barn he noticed the entrance of Cara, who would be his other assistant. Smiling gently he offered his greeting. "Good Morning Cara. I've just been showing Jemma around and explaining that our latest boarding patient will be a pregnant mare who is staying with us until after she has foaled." He glanced at the girls, wondering if they were already friends.

Cara bowed her head politely when the vet acknowledged her presence, she also bowed her head toward Jemma as the other girl deserved the same amount of respect. "Good morning, Sir." She said in her soft tones.
She nodded as he explained about the arrival of the pregnant mare, the girl's head was already working through the things that the mare would need as well as her expected foal. These things however she kept quiet as she still needed to learn to find her vocal cords when not called upon first.
Cara glanced at Jemma, whom she knew from a handful of classes - and her previous school. And from the way she worked with her horses, it was clear that the two girls held the same set of principles when working with horses.
