Bella had so much on her mind. With Kian having his issues, Alexi and just time management in general she still didn't know where she was finding time for her father to visit today. He said that he had a surprise for her, and that could mean a variety of things. A trip somewhere, her being sent home to her mother for a while, her looking after her brothers. In all instances she really hoped that it wasn't the latter. George was now seventeen and John fifteen. They were at that age that anything could happen, and according to Andrew was causing havoc at home. Andrew was studying at Washington State, and was still went home every second week. Thankfully Bella had missed that arrangement with her living in England and all.
So her father had phoned her the same day that she had talked with Kian, and told her ever nonchalant that he was coming to visit. His exact words: Will be at the College by 9. I have a surprise for you. Bella had enough time to mention that on a Saturday at that time she was at the stables, and that he should meet her there. Dressed in her casual riding habit of breeches, paddock boots, chaps, t-shirt and jersey, she waited for the car that her father usually had. Then again this whole thing/visit seemed unusual. Why did he want to visit now? She wasn't unhappy, but why now? He hardly did it at Blue Ridge, and not once yet while at the College. Unless. Unless he wanted to break some form of news to her. News that would hit the newspapers in a day or two.
She shook the thought from her mind, knowing that she should stop always thinking the worst when her father came. Manor stuck his head over the door, and Bella fussed over him. The gelding was always a calming influence, and now that Pan was here with Alexi, she knew where she could go for comfort. The only still missing from the herd was Synergy and Star. Syn had been sold on after Bella out grew him, and Star was at a competitive stable in Arkansas. She missed the horses, but knew they were at good homes.

Dafydd had been in the office since 6am, getting to grips with what he had to do today. Now he was heading toward the barn. He was aware that Bella's father was paying her a visit today, and he'd decided that he was going to linger in the barn to keep an eye on her. Anyway, Andy needed a little bit of gentle exercise and it was the perfect way to increase their slowly forming bond. The chestnut gelding had come out of his shell a little over the past few weeks, and Dafydd couldn't be more pleased. He had a fiery little temper too, which was a good thing in Dafydd's eyes. The male whistled softly as he approached the barn, though he wasn't in the greatest moods this morning. Kristin was beginning to scare him, her hormones all over the place with the pregnancy. He'd been treading on thin ice all week, and was more than aware that it was going to get even thinner over the forthcoming months. So he'd tried to stay out of her way, which seemed to annoy her more. But when he was there, she'd find something to call him up on. Tell him that he was getting under her feet. He just couldn't win.
The male entered the yard and made his way quickly toward Andy's stall. The gelding looked up at the sound of approaching feet, a flicker of delight passing over his expression. There was a note stuck on the geldings stall door, scrawled in handwriting he was becoming to know all too well. He pulled it off and read it quickly.
Fed him this morning, but didn't have time to groom him and exercise him. Riddle kept escaping.
--Remii
The note made him chuckle, knowing full well the antics that the young girls mare good up to. Dafydd entered the stall and picked up the grooming kit just before he pulled the door shut. Andy had, at first, shrunk away at the sight of the red grooming box, but was now very comfortable with it. Dafydd placed it down and made a deliberate noise. He was pleased to see that Andy did not flinch away, Dafydd couldn't contain the bright grin spreading over his lips. Picking up the curry comb, he began to run it in soothing circles over the geldings ragged winter coat.
Soon, the horse was spotless. Andy had nipped Dafydd only twice this time, which was a massive improvement. Usually it was four or five. He retrieved the head collar and lead rope which had been hung up outside the stall and slid them onto Andy's head. He was planning on walking the gelding around the yard a few times, it was the only exercise his sore limbs could handle at the moment. Though, he was growing stronger by the day. His ribs still showed slightly, but it was obvious he'd filled out a bit. His winter coat made him look worse than he actually was though. Opening the stall door once again, he led the placid gelding from it and out into the open.
As he walked the gelding further down the year, he spotted a familiar female. "Morning Bella." he called, walking Andy in her general direction. He made the horse pause a little ways away from Manor, Bella's own horse, stall and smiled warmly at the girl. "Your father hasn't arrived yet I take it?" he asked, slight interest marring his accented vocals. Dafydd hadn't met Bella's father before, though he had heard of him. He preferred to stay in the background when the man came to visit Bella, not wanting to interrupt the reunions. Even today, though he was going to be around the yard, he wouldn't go and introduce himself unless the girl specifically asked him. Though he was protective over the girl, this was one aspect of her life he shouldn't be involved in.

Bella played with Manor's forelock until the horse grew bored with the attention and made his way to the back of the stall. In an almost practiced movement, Flame then moved out of his stall, bobbing his head wanting Bella to come to him. She obeyed, and unlike manor, Flame never grew bored of attention in any form. Hearing her name being called, she looked up to see Dafydd walking towards her with Andy in hand. The chestnut gelding was starting to look better, and Bella noted how different the gelding seemed. It was like Glenn, the Frisian gelding she was working with. After months of hard work, he was finally trusting her enough. Morning Dafydd, she replied, using the casualness of first names.
She gave him a smile back, and thought of her answer. I wouldn't be looking this happy if he had, she answered, with somewhat bitterness. Oh yeah, she was being pessimistic, but at times like these she couldn't help it. She wasn't a person who enjoyed surprises, and her dad springing this one on her wasn't helping much either. Of course Dafydd knew about her dad, he had been there when the call came through. When her father did arrive, she would put on her usual facade, and bear it enough to survive the day. How's Kristin? she asked, knowing that even the students were trying their best to avoid the usually friendly female.
Just then she heard the crunch of tires on gravel, and black Range Rover drove up a few meters away. The tinted windows prevented her from seeing who was in the car, but her instinct told her that it was her father. Here goes nothing, she said to the principal, and walked towards the truck. The driver door had already opened, and out got her father, his salt and pepper hair brushed back. James Black was dressed casually, jeans and a button down shirt. Hey dad, she said, as he kissed her cheek. Hey love, how are you? he asked.
Bella forgot to answer and stared at the passenger side of the truck. Out had gotten her twin brother, Andrew, looking very much fit and athletic as she had left him... And tanned? How the hell does one tan in Washington? Though he did say something about California a while ago. Bella closed her mouth, this time a true grin on her face. Andrew! she squealed in excitement. He had already walked over and giving him a hug, she watched, searching his eyes for something. Surprise, said her dad, a smile on his face.
Bella shared the same facial features with her father, but Andrew looked the most like his father. Oh. Dad, Andrew this is Mr. Rees, the principal. Sir, this is my father, James Black and my twin brother, Andrew, she introduced as they walked over. Andrew tugged on her sleeve, pulling her away for a moment. Listen, we need to talk about something some time, he said, obviously there was some sort of urgency in his voice, but his face remained composed. Bella nodded, a small frown forming on her face.
