Lily-Mae twirled her way across the path that led down to Mason Stables. As per usual she earned a few sideways glances, but it didn't bother her. The girl didn't enjoy attention per say, but she loved getting noticed for being different. The early years of her teens she had spent feeling like an outside, but for the past couple of years she had embraced it. Only around horses that she might upset with her flamboyant behavior would you ever see her calm. Casper was one of these. The Arab stallion was friendly, but her over-excitement caused the same reaction in him. Sonnet on the other hand, the second horse she loaned from the college, adored her erratic moods. The mare wasn't overly chilled, but not verging on insane either. A loud laugh came easily from her lips as she reached the barn door and dropped into silence. Her hands caressed Sonnet's face as she passed, but right now she was heading down to the barn manager's office. A short while ago the college had purchased some new horses from the auction, one of which was a chestnut mare a smidgen bigger than Sonnet, named Blaze of Light. Lily had instantly fallen for the mare, and had ridden her a couple of times to give her some exercise already - as she did with almost all the horses in this barn that weren't assigned to a rider. But after dropping a couple of A-Level courses on returning from the Christmas break, she decided she had enough time on her hands now to take the mare on.
Pausing outside of the tackroom, she slipped inside. There was a folder containing a sheet of information on all the horses in this barn, partly for students reference and partly in case of an emergency. Her eyes skimmed over Sonnet's page but she flipped to Blaze's page a second later. 7 years old, mare, 15.1hh, show-jumping or hunter. Putting the folder away, she headed back into the aisle and a broad smile lit her entire face as she caught sight of Blaze. Determined not to delay anymore, she cast an apologetic look towards the mare for not fussing her now before hurrying to the office door. Knocking gently, she stepped inside when the door opened and replied in her soft vocals, with a slight hint of a French accent. "I was wondering if I could be assigned Blaze? I've got on really well with her during the times I exercised her for you, and I think we suit each other. I know I already have Sonnet and Casper but I do have the time for her. I even dropped a couple of A-Level courses." Her voice slipped away as she wondered if that would dissuade him. It took the girl only a moment to consider this, deciding that from her conversations with him around the barn, school wasn't highly ranked on his list. "Please?" Lily's normally confident sounding vocals faltered as the questioning word emerged almost silently from her lips.
A smile raised to Ed's lips as he heard a familiar knock on the door. Pushing his chair away, he opened the door quickly, knowing Lily would probably be bounding in if he didn't. "So who looks like they desperately want to ridden now then?" The jokey tone was automatic with the younger girl, he was becoming good friends with the girl, treating her like the little sister he had left behind when he moved to live with his grandparents. The jokey mood stopped when he saw the mixture of seriousness, desperation and excitement etched onto Lily's face.
The male listened silently whilst she spoke, leaning against his desk while the words overflowed from her mouth. He feigned mock anger at the news about her dropping academics, but he would have done the same in the situation. His head started to nod and he smiled, "Okay. I've seen how well you two get on. Although I can't imagine your mum was please about you dropping courses." He knew her mother ran the livery yard in town, and had pressured Lily-Mae in the past about getting a good education. Ed listened to her thanks and held up a hand to wish her goodbye as she vanished from the room. Shaking his head in slight disbelief, he returned to his chair to finish flicking through the news. A new auction coming up caught his eye and he jotted down on a post it note to ask some trusted students to scout new horses for the college. He had to let the principal know if he was buying new horses, and the principal could buy horses too. Sighing at his own bad memory, he turned the page and started reading about how the number of violent crimes was going up in the town.
Lily squeaked in delight. If there wasn't horses just through the door it would have been a full scream. Thanking him fifty times, she rushed from the room to go and fuss over Blaze. A few moment of rubbing the mare's body later, she slipped out the stable to collect a grooming kit and the Thoroughbred cross' tack.
