we are broken - - W H A T M U S T W E D O T O R E S T O R E- - our innocence Pulling on her thick jacket, she sighed deeply. Today was her first day of work at Milly's cafe. The girl was shaking slightly as she did the most mundane task of doing up the zip of her jacket. She hadn't long taken something, just before Ethan had left for work at the college. But now she would have to wait until late evening for her next hit. This frustrated her, but she knew she would never go against Ethan's word. For one, she was absolutely petrified of the seemingly nice male. For another, she wanted to please him. Defying him wouldn't encourage the latter, so she didn't do it. Rocky and Zigg sat side by side, watching as she slipped the flat daps onto her feet. Zigg's lanky frame was shaking as hers was, but his were of excitement. Not withdrawal. The young vixen gave both canines a pat and told them that she would walk them later, before picking up her handbag and vacating the flat. Standing in the hallway, she locked the door and the walked to the stairs. Descending them slowly and carefully, knowing that the possibility of falling was much higher for her in this state, she gave a sigh of relief when her flat shoes touched the ground at the bottom of the stone steps. Today already didn't feel like a good day.
Walking at her usual sluggish place, her foot falls were almost silent. Her painfully skinny frame was hidden by a mass of layers. Beneath her thick jacket was a jumper which also covered a vest like T-shirt. All of these hid her xylophone like ribs and also all the needle marrings from where she injected. Her usually lank, greasy locks sat in their springy coils that grazed her shoulders with every step. As every step brought her closer to Milly's, the outlines of people eating their breakfasts and drinking their scorching coffee began to grow much clearer. At about 10 feet from the cafe, Milly herself became visible. The small, almost frail looking, woman was nattering animatedly with a punter, who seemed completely absorbed in whatever the woman was saying. Deanna had heard that she was an interesting character, batty but harmless. She approached the door hesitantly, opening it and nearly closing it once again. The smell of overly buttered toast and frying grease made her gag, causing her locks to fall over her face as she did so. She hadn't wanted to work in Milly's. The thought of serving the disgusting food made her stomach clench. But, Milly's was the only place that would offer her the job. The fact that the old woman was a little blind meant that Deanna hadn't had to work as hard to hide the traces of her habit. Milly had seemed more than happy to hire her. Approaching the counter, she plastered a fake smile upon her chapped lips. "Mornin' Milly. Deanna Grange, it's my first day?" she questioned reluctantly. The woman smiled, pointing Deanna to the back room where she would find her locker and an apron.
The girl followed the direction and entered the room. It was dark, but not overly unpleasant. There were a few chairs placed for the workers for their break times. And the lockers stood leaning against the back wall. There was one window, which you could look out into the Alley way from. Apart from that, it was pretty bare. Going to her locker, she unlocked it and placed her handbag inside. Slipping her phone into her jeans pocket, just in case Ethan needed her, she pulled out the Apron that had been placed in her locker. As she tightened it severely around her waist, she realized that it nearly wrapped all the way around her. She loosened it slowly, but it still looked unhealthy how tight it was held against her frame. Sighing miserably, she tied it into a bow and then shut her locker. Leaving the room, she was greeted by the unpleasant smell that she had experienced earlier. But, this time she did not gag. It seemed to be a little more bearable every time. She went to Milly for instructions, and the elder informed her that she was to clear and wipe tables. This Deanna did gratefully, glad that she would not have to deal with the customers.

Ed Hunt Ed walked down the main street of Park, his Rottie cross Coch Andras trotting by his side, her stumpy tail wagging in excitement. Ed's first trip into town since arriving, seeing as he had to live on the campus of his workplace, the college. He moved quickly but silently, the only noise was Coch's claws ticking against the path. A sigh escaped his lips as he had to wait for some loud teens to pass him in a group. He was only a year or two older than most of the students who dominated the town, but he somehow doubted he had much in common with them. Ed had already done the party scene during his own college years, and now he was verging on depression. Coch froze, catching Ed's eye and he follow suit. He shook his head and laughed at the dog poised with one leg in the air, speaking to her as he pushed open the door of the building in front of them. Sausages, it would seem was what her delicate nose had sniffed out, and Ed very much agreed with her now would be a good a time as any to get some food. Okay, so it was your typical greasy caff, but he'd been in much worse places. One eye graced the doorway, looking for a sign prohibiting dogs. Not finding one, he whistled to Coch who bounded up to him before she assessed who was inside. Ed chuckled once again as the dog decided everyone was safe, and raced off in the direction of a girl clearing tables.
He allowed Coch to approach her, but his lips formed a low warning whistle, Coch's signal to lie down and wait. As the dog obeyed he stepped towards the girl, taking in her pretty albeit extremely thin looks. Nodding his head towards the dog still led at her feet, he apologized. "Sorry, I hope she didn't scare you. She's friendly, so long as she doesn't think your gonna hurt me." He trailed off, aware he didn't normally speak to strangers so openly. Sitting himself down at the table, Coch crawled over to lay across his feet, her belly touching the slightly mucky floor as she moved. "I'm Ed, by the way. Ed Hunt. And this is Coch Andras." His eyes flicked over the table and caught on a menu. Picking it up he turned it in his fingers a few times, the insane urge to always be on the move coming though as per usual. ADHD, the illness that didn't exist in the minds of so many, but as far as Ed was concerned it was very real. According to doctors he was one of the 'unlucky 10%' who didn't grow out of it when they hit their twenty's. Sighing inwardly, he glanced towards the girl again, and decided their was a look of lost innocence in her eyes.

we are broken - - W H A T M U S T W E D O T O R E S T O R E- - our innocence She looked up briefly when she heard the swoosh of the opening door. A male and his hesitant canine entered, making a slight smile lift at her lips. It increased when the Rottie cross bounded over to her, but dropped onto her stomach under her owners' orders. Stooping down to greet the dog, she pat her cranium affectionately and cooed at how pretty she was. Straightening up, she was met by the man taking a step toward her. Her automatic response was to step back, but her face was still relatively friendly. He looked startlingly familiar, but she couldn't place where she knew him from. Shrugging gently, she listened to what he had to say. "It's no worry. Rocky is exactly the same." she said softly, amusement hinting in her usually dead vocals. She watched as he went to sit at the table, his dog following and crawling under said table and sprawling against his feet. He then introduced himself, and the name confirmed that she knew him. Raising a brow, she remembered the boy from school. He had been a bad boy, not really something she had been attracted to at school. But since her, well, prostitution days, bad boys where all that she attracted. He was taller than she remembered, but he was two years older than herself so he hadn't changed too much. "It's been a while Ed. Deanna Grange? Don't suppose my name rings a bell, does it?" she asked quietly, before freezing when she heard her phone go off.
Slipping her hand into her pocket, she pulled out her mobile. Mentally flinching when she read whom the text was from, she hesitantly clicked the 'open' button. What have I told you about speaking to men? it said, making her now physically flinch. Ethan was watching from somewhere. Looking around slowly, she couldn't see any trace of his blonde hair. Nor his deep blue oracles. Her eyes fell back on Ed, and an emotionless mask fell back upon her features. "Can I get you anything?" she asked in monotone. After taking down his order, she made sure to add 'extra sausages' for Coch and turned to take the order to the cook. When she handed it over, he rose a brow at the request for extra sausages. He peered out the small hatch and caught a glimpse of Coch's rump sticking out from under the table. He chuckled good heartedly, and winked to say that he would do so. She let her lips pull into a smile, before falling flat when he returned into the kitchen to cook up the food.
As she waited, leaning against the counter, her oracles strayed to outside the cafe. She caught a glimpse of a man passing, he had a similar shade of hair to Ethan. Holding her breath, her whole frame was tense. But then, the man turned around and it didn't seem to be whom she feared it to. Letting out the held breath, her shoulders slumped. Strumming her fingers on the counter impatiently, she drifted into a world of her own. This meant that she jumped when the cook shouted that her order was ready. Biting her lip, she retrieved the plate and walked from behind the counter. Slowly and carefully, due to the fact that her hands were shaking much more dramatically now and she would be sure to drop the food if she went much faster, she made her way back to Ed's table. Placing down the plate, she didn't look him in the eye as she straightened up. "There you go. The extra's are for Coch." she said almost inaudibly. Without another word, she retreated back to the counter and was summoned by Milly to fill up a mans mug of coffee. She did so without argument.

Ed smiled faintly as the girl made a fuss of Coch, something which could almost guarantee him giving someone a chance. He mentally noted down the fact she had a dog, and the... amused... tones in her voice. It wasn't normally an emotion that he created, amusement. Annoyance, yes. Anger, yes. Happiness, occasionally. But not amusement. For a brief second he wondered if her amusement was stemming from the fact she was about to taunt him, but it didn't seem anywhere near right. When she replied with her name a memory flickered. She had gone to his school, several years ago. From what he could dredge up from his memory, she was a quiet and well-behaved student, whom he had little to do with. At school he had been labeled as naughty and disruptive, eventually playing up to this expectation. "Wow, Deanna. Not a face I expected to see working in a greasy caff, you were a top student, right?". A little of his cockiness from the time he had known her slipped back with the memories, and he was grinning when her phone sounded. He simply observed as she became anxious on reading the text, and her query came in a harsher tone.
"I'll have a black coffee and a full english breakfast, if that's ok?" He double checked. His curiosity wanting to ask what was wrong, but not quite daring to. He kept his eye on the young woman as she made her way over to the cook, she had a tiny figure, too tiny really. But she still looked stunning. He chided himself for the thoughts as she came over with his order. Ed watched Deanna's unsteady hands as she put down his plate and spoke in less than a whisper. He smiled up at her worried face, slipping the sausages under the table to Coch whilst the woman was watching, and then saw her be called away.
His spent a few moments just sitting and sipping his drink whilst he thought what the text could have said to have such a big affect on her. An avid people-watcher already, it didn't seem the sort of worry that a relative had been rushed to hospital, it seemed like someone had made some sort of a threat to her. The way she looked around as though someone was suddenly going to charge at her violently. He sighed as he started his meal, she wasn't exactly going to turn round and share all her worries with some guy who, if not a stranger, wasn't exactly a friend.

we are broken - - W H A T M U S T W E D O T O R E S T O R E- - our innocence His reaction to her name made her bristle, so Ethan's disruption may have been for the best. If Deanna had got talking about what happened, everything would spill out. After taking his order and then coming back with the food, a smile hinted at her lips when he fed the sausages to Coch. Then, she carried on with her duties. As she did this, her oracles would every now and then flicker back to Ed. She found herself wanting to speak to him, but with Ethan watching, she couldn't bring herself to. She was back to wiping tables again, and it seemed all the ones that needed to be cleaned were the ones beside Ed. She groaned silently, before taking herself to the tables. Starting at the furthest one away, she scrubbed it so much she was pretty sure it would be the cleanest it had ever been when she was done. Moving onto table number too, it felt as if her throat was beginning to close up. Her mind was beginning to swirl and she knew that she needed the fresh air. Walking briskly back to Milly, she questioned if she could go outside for a minute. The older woman looked at Deanna suspiciously, before taking in the deathly pale skin and her worried expression, and then nodded. "Take all the time you need dear." Thanking her, Deanna rushed out of the cafe and into the alley way beside it.
Leaning against the wall, she was breathing unsteadily. She needed a hit, something to completely send her out of it and remove the worries of every day life. Crouching down, she still kept her back against the wall. Her phone went off again, she had the urge to ignore it. But, it continued to buzz which meant a phone call. Slipping her hand into her pocket, she pulled the phone out and pressed the green button. "Hello Ethan." she said shakily, closing her oracles as she spoke. "You know you're in trouble when you get home. Avoid it, and it'll be worse. Come home, I'll be lenient." he hissed down the phone, before hanging up. She was shaking again, much more violently than she had been. Trying to force the phone back into her pocket, she grew frustrated when it didn't work. Snarling in anger, she threw the phone at the wall opposite. Instead of going to get it, she just stared as various parts scattered through the alley way. Her head fell into her hands and tears began to fall silently down her cheeks. How ever much she was scared of Ethan, even hated him at times, there was no way she could leave him. 1, he was her supplier. Although she could find another one, she wouldn't get the same treatment as she did from Ethan. Free drugs in exchange for sex. Yeah, not the most healthy relationship, but it was Deanna's means of survival. Anyways, point two to why she couldn't leave him, she did truthfully love him. She knew he didn't return her affections, but it suited her just fine. Sighing deeply, she removed her cranium from her hands and pressed it against the wall behind her. Five more minutes she told herself, knowing full well it would be a little longer.

Finishing up his drink, he moved on to the breakfast meal as Coch finished her sausages and started to lick his leg. Chuckling he glanced down at the dog and grinned at her, causing her tail to thump against the floor. With his eyes seemingly glued to either his food or the dog, they were actually sneaking looks towards Deanna. And on more than one occasion, he caught her doing the same. Suddenly she vanished out into the back room, and through a window he glimpsed her leaving the building altogether. Not wanting to seem too worried about her, he sat and finished his meal. Wishing Milly goodbye whilst he gave her the payment and thanking the cook for the sausages, he left the cafe and turned into the alleyway.
As he turned the corner he heard Deanna's phone, and then her greeting to someone named Ethan. She seemed more worried than before now, and Ed guessed this was the person who had text her. Pausing where he was, he signaled to Coch to wait. He withdrew slightly, unable to see - only hear - what was going on. Without another word spoken by the girl something smashed, presumably the phone into the opposite wall. He flinched at the sound, and a growl started to form between Coch's lips.
Slipping round the corner, he saw Deanna leant against the wall, tears still on her cheeks although not forming anymore. Not approaching her, he collected the various pieces of the phone. None seemed to be in more pieces that they should if the phone had been dismantled, and he managed to put it back together again. Not turning it on, Ed now slowly walked up to Deanna, Coch a few paces behind him. "I fixed your phone," he spoke in soft tones, any trace of cockiness from the cafe had vanished, "do you want to smash it again?" He questioned lightly, although there was no hint of sarcasm in his voice. He turned and leant against the wall a meter or so away from her, adopting a similar position to her own. Coch first follow Ed, but then turned and lay down just in front of Deanna's feet.

we are broken - - W H A T M U S T W E D O T O R E S T O R E- - our innocence She looked up at the sound of approaching feet, making her recoil briefly. When she saw who is was, she couldn't stop the relief flickering over her features. She had never thought that a person, whom may as well be a stranger, would make her feel so safe. She watched as he fixed her phone, and then handed it back to her. The question that he accompanied with the phone made her give a snort of laughter. Another reaction she hadn't expected. Coch also made her feel safe, the canine obviously decided that Deanna needed comforting. Leaning down a little to pat her thankfully, she then straightened up and looked Ed in the eye. She decided to address the question he had asked when they were still in the "To answer your question about me being a top student, you were correct to an extent. You could say that after I turned sixteen, I would get on better with the sorts you hung around with." she said quietly, her tone strange, maybe almost snide. She wanted to inform him what had happened, she knew she had been the talk of her town when she had gone of the rails. The only people who knew the truth though were the men she slept with, or was forced to anyway. In brief moments of sanity, she had found it ironic that her best clients were those she had been taught to look up to when she was younger.
"Prostitution, Drugs, Abuse and all that in between." she summed up the life that had swept her up since leaving school. He probably wouldn't have expected her to turn out how she did, nobody ever did. It would explain her weight and why she looked so ill, but what it didn't explain is why it was still going on. She looked away from him, conscious that she had let herself become so vulnerable. But, she also felt better for telling someone. Pursing her lips in thought, she wondered Ed's reactions to what she had revealed. Now staring at her feet, she was beginning to regret what she had said. Her frame was edging a little further down the alley, somewhat nervous in her movements. So many people had taken advantage, she should have known not to trust him so easily. Her mind was screaming at her, but she couldn't make sense of it. Closing her oracles tightly, she stopped her movements. Still her eyes were closed, she spoke again. "Before you say something sarcastic, just don't bother. I've heard it all before. I know what I have done with my life is s**t, but it is my means of survival." she said quietly, but there was a tone of defense underlying her vocals. "We can't all turn out to be the good person." Her tone was now matter of fact, maybe a little sadistic humor lurking in there. The words had actually brought a smirk to her lips, a soft chuckle slipping through. She wasn't entirely sure what she found so funny, maybe it was just her sanity slipping away again.
