And with the faint taste of cigarettes You write Hallelujah songs Ain’t it wonderful, you feelin’ alright, so I tickle up your backbone And at the break of the day you sank into your dream world

Jemma had been up since the break of day. Her excitement could be seen in the way Spartan and DJ reacted to her early morning visit. Their faces held a mix of surprise, but more than that Jemma was waiting for her dad to come fetch her. The black truck pulled up in front of the stables, and Jemma hopped in. The smell of coffee greeted her, and Jemma made herself comfortable and soon they were rolling into the lot of her father's stable yard. Did I fall asleep? she mumbled. Yup, you did, her father said with a small smile. Kingship is waiting for you in his stall. I'm just gonna hook up the trailer.
By now the sun had well and truly risen in the sky, and for a Saturday, Jemma enjoyed it. She shed her thick jacket, and went to find the black gelding. Kingship poked his eager head over the stall door, and she started getting him ready for the trip. She led him out to the cross-ties, and made sure his ebony black coat sparkled. On went his travelling boots, and then the rug. Her father interrupted her at this point. Anything I can do to help? he asked. Um, if you could please load his gear into the truck as well as his grooming kit and rugs. Thanks for this dad. I appreciate it. She smiled at him, and went back to Kingship.
Lastly she removed his head collar and put on the fleece one that was made for travelling. Jemma had another lead head collar in the truck that had Kinship engraved on a brass plate and that had been put onto the nose band. Callum didn't know anything about Kingship, but she knew that he would love the horse. She wasn't looking for a replacement for Champagne, but rather one that would become another friend for her boyfriend.
Loading was easy, and by mid afternoon, they were off again. She texted Callum, and it read like this: Hey love. On way back from dad's. Meet me at stable. Love you xoxo Jemma wondered what his reaction would be to Kingship. It was an interesting prospect. Once again, and all too soon, her dad stopped by the stables again. Jemma saw a figure, and knew that it was a Callum. Her smile grew and she hopped out to meet him, popping her black stetson on her head.

Callum was sat in his room doing homework when his phone beeped to signify a text across the other side of the room. Standing up reluctantly, he wondered who it could be. Jemma was visiting her dad today, and he knew that her father had a stables not too far away from the college. Sighing he walked across, still in his old tracksuit that he wore for pajamas. The ID said Jemma, so he bothered to read the message. Interest flickered across his face, and sent a quick reply before heading for a shower. Hey, Okay, see you there in a little while. Love Callum x. Finishing with his shower he dried and then dressed in his usual outfit of a black tee and jeans. He glanced around his room as he left, it was unusually tidy. Without Champagne to occupy his time, and Jemma being out today he had found little to do. Hence resulting to tidying his room.
At the stables containing all the student's horses, he stopped by Wallflower to make a fuss of her. He had already ridden the large pony earlier, but really he was just keeping her fit until he found a someone local and nice who would be better suited to her size-wise, his tall, albeit skinny, frame not looking so good on her now. He didn't know many students, let alone many who would suit her reserved nature, and he once again toyed with the idea of putting a sign up on the notice board and in Hooves and Tails. Deciding to do so later on, he smiled faintly when he heard the purr of a truck, and went to lean on the yard's gate. The truck pulled up a few moments later, with a trail attached to the back. Curiosity and the good kind of suspicion now surrounded his mind, and he walked over to Jemma to greet her as she climbed out. "Hey Jem," he spoke with the curiosity clear in his tones, giving his girlfriend a hug. Callum stepped away smartly when her father emerged though, greeting him politely. "Hello Mr McLaughlin." He glanced towards Jemma, wondering what was going on.

Jemma lean't into Callum's warm embrace, but stopped when her dad appeared. A slight flush entered her cheeks, but she shook her head at her dad's questioning look. Hello Callum, her dad greeted back, before he went to go stand by the trailer. She turned back to Callum, a wide smile already on her face. Okay. I have a small surprise for you, she said, but her dad coughed at the small. Okay, maybe not that small, she continued. Jemma went to the horse trailer, and helped her dad lower the ramp. Kingship gave a frustrated stamp with his back leg. This horse wanted out, and Jemma hurried to obey. Going to the front of the trailer, she helped out the black gelding while her father guided the horse by the tail.
Kingship gave a snort and regarded everyone with a wary eye before bellowing out his arrival. The Selle Francais danced in place, and took in the new scents that surrounded him. Jemma led him up to Callum and held out the lead rein. Happy birthday and Merry Christmas for the next few years, she joked. Jemma's dad came to stand on the other side of the stocky gelding,I have a very convincing daughter. You be sure to look after Kingship here, her father said with an affectionate pat on the horse's neck, before turning back to the truck and he started unloading the horse's gear. So what do you think of him? Jemma asked, her excitement coming through.

Callum nodded at the greeting, his eyes flashing to Jemma with a questioning gaze. A not so small surprise? It all started to make a little more sense, the horse trailer, Jemma's dad. As it finally dawned him, Jemma was leading a beautiful black horse. Clearly a sport horse of some type, the height and build led him to the conclusion of a Selle Francais in moments. He accepted the lead rope, a grin in place instantly. There was a little urge to scream as though he were 10 years old and run around dancing insanely, but he contained it, choosing to just hug Jemma tight instead, words failing him. This time his excitement masked the embarrassment of Jemma's father, but when he finally stepped back he threw an apologetic glance at the male. "Wow, I don't know what to say. Thank you so much. I will have to start working on your present I think!" He joked hesitantly, more than a little surprised at the situation. "Kingship..." he repeated musingly after the comment from the older male. "I will try my best, sir. Thank you. And you have a wonderful daughter. " Politeness was in his tone automatically, but his excitement slipped through, unable to resist feeding something in about Jemma's brilliance.
The question from Jemma stumped him for a moment, and whilst he thought he ran his eyes over the horse. "Conformation wise, he's good. Lovely build for showjumping. But that's not what you meant, is it? Despite him clearly finishing off with a question, he spoke in not a questioning tone. "I think he's amazing, and I can't believe you would do something like this for me. Thank you." With her father in the trailer, he planted a small kiss on her cheek.

Jemma loved Callum's reaction to Kingship. The black gelding was sometimes a handful, but the two would go great together. Callum's excitement was palpable in the air. Soon Kingship was nuzzling his new owner for treats, and lipping his hair. I will do anything for you, was her whispered reply to his thanks. Believe it or not, there is one more thing that I want to give you. She walked back to the truck and got out the box that contained the leather halter. She had initially meant it to be for Champagne, but luckily she changed the plate at the last minute.
Once more she walked back to Callum, and presented him with the box. Something smaller, but it works just as well, she said. She didn't know what she would do without Callum, but he was fantastic. Some had said their relationship would never last, but they had proven the majority wrong. It was a good feeling knowing she had Callum on her side. Let's go settle this big boy in, she suggested, but waited for Callum's reply before moving.

Callum smiled at Jemma's responses, and did a clearly fake face of surprise at being given something else - hands grasping his face and his mouth forming the 'o' of a cartoon character. He chuckled, but was actually quite surprised, what more could she possibly have got him?! She returned with a beautiful leather headcollar with Kingship on a shining brass plate attached to it in a box. He smiled to show his delight, wrapping his arms around her.
Taking Kingship to his stable seemed like a good idea, so he nodded and removed his arms from around her. Kingship had been standing alongside the whole time, not objecting to the fact there was little attention on him. Leading him properly into the yard, he glanced at Jemma, still grinning. "So tell me about Kingship then, what's he like, how does he ride? How old is he, does he have a show-name? What's his history?" The questions gushed out of his mouth, and he couldn't stop once he started. Laughing at himself and imagining a face of shock on Jemma at so many questions, "Whoa too many questions. Okay, answer the ones you can remember."
The grin didn't leave his face as he found a stable prepared in the yard already. Either Jemma had prepared it earlier, or a groom had done it. Either way, she had some involvement in it, another sign of what she had done for him. He unclipped Kingship's lead and hung it over a hook, however much he wanted to start bonding with the horse it was probably best to let him have a little time to himself to get used to his new surroundings. So instead he concentrated on Jemma's answers, ready with a new batch of questions.

Jemma laughed at Callum's expression of 'surprise'. Honestly, it was funny. She felt his warm arms wrap around her and she hugged back. Walking towards the stall, Jemma smiled at Callum's questions. She counted them off on her fingers, and started relying to them all. His show name is Flight of a Phoenix. It was something French, but dad changed it. Some of the commentators had a little trouble with the pronunciation. He's seven, and an eventer. He's a fantastic ride. Slightly spooky at new objects, but learns quickly. He's a tad hot under saddle, but not the kind to buck his rider off. His stable manners can be worked on. He's mouthy and a tad pushy. Overall he's sweet, but needs a gentle hand. He's a fantastic ride and just amazing in the country. He was born in France and used in international competitions. He was also a stallion until dad got him. Sired round about 30 foals. He's FEI ranked I think. Naturally she took pauses in between, but the monologue had been a long one.
By the look on Callum's face there was much more he wanted to know. Jemma just smiled and watched the large gelding. Her dad came down the aisle with the gelding's tack and put it in the tack room. A few minutes later, he came back with the horse's rugs and grooming kit. The show equipment was in another tack box on top of the first one. I'll be off now. Bye hon. I'll see you again. Jemma hugged her father goodbye, and he held out his hand for Callum to shake.
