All you need to do is start a thread for each character. It depends on the teacher whether or not posting the class in your timetable is enough to be considered 'signed-up' for the class or whether you need to post in a sign-up on the notice board.
All classes are optional, as this is college not school. There are three types of classes. A-Levels are the academic based lessons, it's a qualification in England (and some other places). It's a little higher than what American student's get on leaving high school. Diplomas are the posh name for the equine courses, in England Diplomas are basically the more practical qualification route you can go after high school. There are also going to be one or two university classes which are aimed at the more academically gifted students. Although they are optional classes, it's recommended that you take a mix of A-Levels and Diplomas.
