NICKNAMES: MJ; Matt
AGE: 32
GENDER: Male
ETHNICITY: Scottish
STUDENT OR STAFF: Staff; Rugby Coach and Geography teacher
HALL: Dakota
PERSONALITY:
Matt really is like an over friendly puppy. He is friendly, and seems to attach to people easily, only leaving when he feels like it. He may seem like annoyance at times, but there is really no harm in his actions. He isn't judgemental, and accepts people for who they are. It comes from being the second youngest, and his parents raising him right. He really isn't the type that would be purposefully malicious to someone. It also made him a target in the lower grades, but he never let it faze him.
When Matt is hurting, you know it. His smile is gone, and it seems like there is a constant rain cloud above his head. It doesn't take a lot to cheer him up though. A cup of coffee and cookies, and all is well in the land of Matt. Sometimes he does brood a bit, mostly because of Mikayla and everything that came with her. He hasn't been in a serious relationship since, and doubts that he could handle one. There was something about Mikayla that made his breath catch in his throat, and he hasn't found it in any other woman.
As a coach, he is hard on his players, but he learns quickly how far he can push each one. For him, it isn't about winning, but the passion that goes with it. He wants each player to be inspired, not only in their rugby careers, but outside of the sport as well. He is also a confidant for students, making sure that he is always available for them when they need him.
Matt doesn't get angry, he gets disappointed. He takes you on a guilt trip that makes even the most bad-ass of students feel guilty. He doesn't do it often though, but when he does, then it's one of those rare moments.
BACKGROUND:
Matt was born on a farm just on the outskirts of Loch Ness. His was an unexpected labour, demanding entrance into the world three weeks too early, resulting in a home birth. His father was a sheep farmer and his mother stayed at home. He is one of five kids, having two older brothers and an older and a younger sister. It was a large family, and they lived a simple lifestyle. They weren't poor, but there seemed to be enough money to get by and not buy luxuries that other kids seemed to have. He loved it though, and from a young age he was always out exploring and bringing in animals and insects that he found.
His grandparents owned the adjacent farm, and they had one or two pasture ponies that provided endless hours of entertainment and companionship for Matt. He always seemed to be off on his own and doing something that involved animals. It would seem that he would be the one to take over the sheep farm, but during his teenage years, his interests turned to how the earth moved and shifted. The topography and lay of the land. That would be his final calling next to rugby. Matt started playing rugby as soon as he entered high school and never stopped. He was selected for the county teams repeatedly and earned awards like crazy. He was destined to go play for the national team. He ended up in a private boarding school in Edinburgh on a scholarship and he flourished. The rugby and the classes were much better, and nobody had ever seen the teen as happy as then. Matt ended up graduating with five A- levels, namely in Maths, Science, Geography, Biology and English.
He also got a scholarship to Cambridge and ended up studying teaching. He carried on playing rugby, but in an accident during a ruck, he fractured three vertebrae, broke his collarbone and snapped almost all of the muscle in his shoulder. The doctor said he would never play again. Matt fell in love with the classroom, and went back to his home town to teach there, also coaching rugby which was the next best thing for him. It wasn't just the classroom he fell in love with, but a certain girl. Her name was Mikayla and they started going out in Varsity. At twenty-four he married her and at twenty-seven she died from cancer. He took the loss hard, and he misses her even now. He moved from place to place, the restlessness setting in. Once he felt that he could do all that he can at his last school, he saw the post as a Geography teacher being advertised at Park, and applied. Now, he finds himself in new territory, but excited.
