Kris loved the snow, its powdery white flakes had been coming down steadily for the last few days, bringing the sense that Christmas was really around the corner. The College had been decorated at the beginning of December already, and the students had been looking forward to the Christmas break, many already travelling to their various homes over the weekend. A few had stayed, Max and Bella being daily visitors. Jace was working and Ruthie had convinced her parents to come to visit her instead. Only after the New Year would they be flying to France. Kris had Shane with her now, and even he was giving the family a miss for the first time in years.
For Kris it was even more special to have the Christmas season as it was the Twin’s first Christmas, and at nine months, they were already babbling incoherently. Brynne was abusing ‘mama’ taking it a bit too far, but Seth was already walking when he wanted to. Thankfully Dafydd had been home when both these things happened, and it had filled her with joy to see the delight and pride on his face. According to her doctor, she was three months into her second pregnancy, but all caution was being taken. Kris had told Dafydd she would stop riding, and she did, but in all other aspects she refused to be treated like a porcelain doll.
Making lunch was eventful, because the apartment had filled up with teenagers and children. Shane had bought Julie along, the three year old being entertained by Max who was the only one who could German fluently, and despite being the poster boy for plaster casts and bruises, was very entertaining to the young girl. Bella and Kian looked much older, the idea of parenthood taking over completely and happiness radiating off them. Ieuan seemed to be happy again, and Jace and Ruthie would be popping in later. Zoe also seemed to be warming up to the adoptive family, and was having friendly banter with Dafydd. It took long enough to get that to happen. The only two absent were Niall and Amelia, but she had a feeling that they wouldn’t be making an appearance. The apartment was filled with laughter and chatter, everything seeming to be better than it was a few weeks ago with various drama's going on.
Scratching in the fridge in the fridge, Kris realised that there wasn’t any cheese left, and she kinda needed it for the salad. A quick run into town seemed to be ideal, and she went into the living room. “I’m just taking a quick trip to the grocery store,” she said with a smile at the happy group. She stopped by Dafydd, whispering for only him to hear. I'll be careful, she said with a kiss to his forehead. A kiss on top of each of the twin's head and she was just about ready to go. Once Kris had put on her coat and jacket, she grabbed the car keys and left the building.
The speed she was driving at was slower than usual, and Kris was thankful for the snow chains on the car. It didn't take too long to reach the town, and she stopped at what seemed to be the only traffic light in town. Her indicator showed that she wanted to turn left, and left she did turn when the light was green for her. All of a sudden and out of nowhere, a truck jumped the red light and crashed into her, lifting the car and causing it to roll onto the roof and slide. For Kris, all she felt was the weightlessness of being airborne and what seemed to be a deafening crack. The accident didn't leave her unconscious, but she felt the pain in her body. The baby, she kept mumbling, tears streaming down her face as she hung, her seatbelt keeping her from moving.
Ruthie would have recognised the car that had just crashed anywhere, and she saw Kris. Adrenaline took over her system, and she pulled out her phone, dialling Dafydd's number. Dafydd, there's been an accident, she choked out as soon as the man answered.
