PLAYBY: Joe Dawson
FULL NAME: Shane Luke Monaghan
NICKNAMES: N/A
AGE: 27
GENDER: Male
ETHNICITY: Scottish
STUDENT OR STAFF: Staff: Assistant Show Jumping Coach and Horse Trainer
HALL: Hallow Flats
PERSONALITY:
Shane is an introvert. He doesn’t speak much, thinks a lot, and is quite cautious when it comes to anything that could affect his life in a drastic way. He considers all options before picking the one that could give him the best results. It has made many a relationship difficult because he isn’t the spontaneous type, and that has made a few things frustrating to the person he is going out with. His dark and brooding nature also attracts unwanted attention to himself.
Shane hasn’t always been like that. He only really became like that after a horrible divorce. He didn’t really give himself time to get over the marriage and a few months later started dating again. Now he prefers to wing it on his own and doesn’t want a relationship.
On his happier days, he makes more attempts at conversation and does talk a bit more. His family does come first, and he is the only one in the close family that hasn’t broken off contact with Kristen. Shane doesn’t willingly seek company of strangers or large crowds, making shows quite difficult for him, but stables have become a favourite hide out of his. He doesn’t like physical affection, shrugging it off and moving away. He doesn’t have a need for it like some other men do, and coupled with his gentlemanly manners, makes him even more of a target.
Around his family and sister, he is really relaxed, his old talkative personality coming through. He becomes warm and caring, and really just a big fluffy sweetheart. Trust is also a big thing for him. He does trust his sister and parents, but it’s hard for Shane to trust people or friends that he hasn’t known for long. Blame Kerry for that one.
He doesn’t have a short temper, and when he does get angry, he’ll usually keep it inside until he can’t anymore and then it gets ugly.
BACKGROUND:
Shane was born four years after Kristen. He was the unplanned child of the family, but everybody says that the house just didn’t feel complete without him. He took the same road as Kris when it came to horses, starting to ride from the age of three. The natural talent with equines ran in the family, and soon Shane was competing as well. He was a cute one on horseback, and the photos concur.
School was easy enough. Shane was smart and aced his classes. High school was maybe a little worse. He had the potential and he kept his grades up, but the wonders of underage drinking and experiments with drugs got him into trouble more than once. By the age of sixteen he had been in rehab twice for meth addiction and had almost broken the family apart. Kris was twenty and in love, competing in Europe and making a name for herself. She had always been there for Shane, but for once he took a back seat in her life. It took reigniting the spark of horses in his life that may just have saved Shane. Kris did that one thing her brother, and made him a deal. If he finished school with distinction, then he could compete alongside her in Europe. Obviously he agreed because the sibling duo took the riding world by storm.
Shane never went to University and was 19 when he met Kerry. The Irishwoman was a fierce red head with a strong will and opinions to match. She was only 18, but boy she could ride. It took a lot of convincing, but he finally convinced her to go out with him. By the time they were twenty, Shane and Kerry had rushed into marriage, much to the family’s dismay. Jax and Kris had been married two years, but at least Jax had an established yard and a degree to fall back on.
It was a poisonous marriage, never meant to be, but Shane wouldn’t listen to anyone. He kept competing, riding for Jax had it advantages, but making ends meet was a bit harder than it seemed. Shane was 24 when Julie was born. His daughter had similar features to him, but inherited Kerry’s flaming red hair. It was also the year Jax died in the tragic riding accident and the family all but disowned Kris. Shane took over the running of the yard while his sister was looking for a buyer, and when the large yard was bought, was lucky enough to keep his job.
Kerry didn’t find that life so exciting, and started having an affair behind Shane’s back. He only found out a year ago, and he was torn at having to decide. Staying in the marriage was not an option and that left divorce. He knew that he might never see his daughter again, but the judge ruled in his favour. He gained full custody of Julie, a happy two year old. She knew that things were different, but Shane didn’t know how to explain to her that she’ll only see her mom over the holidays. It was hard enough to be a single father, a working single father was almost impossible. The routine became easier after a few months.
Shane was surprised when Kristin phoned him and asked him to help out for a few months, but he was happy to accept. He arranged with the yard owner that if he wanted his job back that it would be his for the taking, and Shane is happy to be around his sister again. With his daughter and animals, Park is going to be an interesting challenge.
MISC.:
SHEILA is a six month old Border-Aussie mutt. Shane adopted her from the local animal shelter in Germany when he was looking for a dog to liven up the yard a bit. She is a ball of energy, but provides enough entertainment to not go out in the evenings. Her friendly, but cautious nature also makes her a great guard dog and overly protective of Julie. Sheila does have her lazy days, and spends them sleeping in the sun. Her quirky behaviour includes befriending cats and horses, and finding all sorts of trouble to get into.
JOKER or more commonly known as Sid is actually a female Siberian Husky. The nickname has strange origins, being named after the Sid from Ice Age. She is the grand dame of the family at 9 years of age. The age doesn't stop Sid, still running ahead on trail rides or keeping Sheila in check. She doesn't do as much physical activity as she used to, but Sid really is just a friendly bugger that seeks attention from anyone.
FLUFFBALL or Fluff, is a male two year old Norwegian Forest Cat. He kinda just showed up on Shane's doorstep and never left. He rules the roost, prefers Shane's head as a perch and follows him everywhere. He isn't the smallest cat and is quite heavy, so he get's shoved off more often than he is allowed to stay on his 'perch'.
