Day two, so far so good. she thought to herself, the smallest of smiles pulling at her chapped lips. The slight movement beside her alerted her that Ollie was awake too. Glancing at the clock, she saw it was just after nine. She had slept a little later than anticipated, but her mind reasoned that she'd worked non stop yesterday and her body needed to recover. She glanced over to the empty bed that would soon hold a room mate, but for now she had the room to herself. Half of her was pleased, but the better half missed the company. A long 17 years of sharing her room with her twin was what she was used to, and without someone there it felt weird. Slowly, she rolled herself from the bed. She hadn't anticipated the fall though, and landed with a quiet thump. This startled the nervous Greyhound on the bed behind her, and he scrambled forward to look over the edge at her. Shaking with silent laugher, she lifted herself up from the floor and planted a kiss on the top of his head. He sighed in contentment and rest his head on his paws, awaiting his mistress to get ready for the day ahead.
Alice tugged on her beaten up riding boots, knowing full well that she should get some new ones but couldn't bare to part with them. They were her favorite, and also somewhat lucky. When she wore them, everything seemed to go right. She swore by them when she first started working with Chip and also Zoe. She was just glad she her feet hadn't grown since she was ten. Chuckling softly to herself, she grabbed her riding hat and called Ollie to her side. The lithe canine trotted elegantly to her, his shoulder firmly pressed against her leg. Her outfit was simple today, like always when she rode. Usually though, she was the style guru. Today it was her jodhpurs, tank top and a hoodie. Nothing too out there as she had work to do. She opened up the door to her room and let herself out, making sure Ollie had also left before she pulled the door tight behind them. Today she was going to ride Zoe on the trails. The large Draft Mule was fed up of not being ridden after three days, she was used to her daily exercise. But at least she could go a little longer than usual, she'd have a lot more energy in her. A fond smile stretched over her face as she though of the mare, which turned to amusement when she pictured Chip beside her. At 13.2 hh Chip, her Spotted Saddlebred pony, looked tiny beside Zoe's huge 17 hh structure. They made a comical pair, but to anyone passing by it was obvious that they adored one another.
Staying in the shadows, a thing that Alice did expertly, she and Ollie made their way to the barn in no time. Nobody cast them a second glance. Or a first one really. Loneliness settled heavily over her heart, but she quickly clawed it away and set her jaw. She didn't need others. She was used to being independent. Ollie, Chip, Zoe and Savvy were all she needed. Don't kid yourself. her brain told her, causing Alice's shoulders to sag a little. Envy stabbed at her as she passed a group of chattering females, who paused momentarily to asses her as she passed. At first, she looked down at herself in confusion when they smiled warmly at her. Her hand self consciously went to her face, sure they were laughing at her because she'd done something wrong. They looked confused, and Alice realized she was being stupid. Tentatively she smiled back at them, but they soon lost interest and carried on with their conversation. Alice sighed, her palm hitting her forehead. "Stupid, stupid, stupid." she mumbled, picking up her pace and rounding the corner to the stables.
She and Ollie were now making their way back to the stables once again, now leading a relaxed Zoe. She, Chip and Foxxy, Savvy's mare, had spent the night in the pastures. Foxxy and Chip were still out, and would probably remain there until later in the day when Savvy would be down to work with Foxxy and Alice intended on riding Chip as well today. Alice flashed a concerned look at the mare she was leading, they were about to pass a large horse box, and Alice could feel her getting a little nervous. Tactfully, Alice moved so that she was between Zoe and the trailer, and rubbed soothing circles on her neck as they walked. Ollie had also glued himself to Alice's side, scared of the many students gathered around. The spring weather seemed to have everyone out in force, and Alice wished there was a quieter route back to the stables. Alas, there was not, so they were going to have to brave the crowding. Many horses and their owners passed them, on their way to the pastures or from. Zoe moved at a fairly slow pace, which was enjoyable for both mare and mistress, so it was easy for them to be overtaken. Eventually they made it to the stall that Zoe would so rarely be using, and let the mare inside.
Alice returned from the tack room quickly, she and Ollie had practically gone unseen and unheard. Alice pondered how good the skill was that she moved so efficiently without being noticed, and decided that it was mostly a good thing. Even if she did want companionship, at least she didn't attract unwanted attention. Zoe's heavy saddle hung from Alice's right arm, her bridle clutched tightly in her left. Ollie trailed a little behind his mistress, hiding from view of other humans, but sped up a little bit when Zoe came back into view. He was fascinated by the large mare, and adored that she always seemed to be pleased to see him. Alice smiled softly at the scene of Ollie lifting his nose to meet Zoe's in greeting, and then hooked the bridle outside the stall and let herself inside. Alice tacked up Zoe gently, avoiding the places on her that she knew were a little sensitive, keeping the girth loose so that she would have to tighten it when on Zoe's back. She slipped the bitless bridle onto the willing mare, and then they were ready. Patting Zoe affectionately, she let her from the stall and mounted with ease.
Alice, Zoe and Ollie were soon on the Woodland trail. They were moving at a slow, easy walk. Alice could feel Zoe's muscles loosening by the minute, and she knew that soon they'd be able to have a brief trot and maybe even a canter. But for now, walking was fine. The sun shone brightly in the cloudless sky, warming the trio lovingly. It seemed to engulf them in a playful caress, wanting to please them but then tucking away when they passed a particularly large tree that blocked it's beams. Ollie trotted on ahead, scenting the air every now and then. There was no sign of anyone else on the trail right now, much to Alice's relief, so the three were all in relaxed states. Ollie's audits perked in interest suddenly, and he took off into the undergrowth. Chip would have spooked instantly, but Zoe took it all in her stride. She was used to it, as was Alice. She was guessing there was a woodland creature that he desperately needed to chase. Alice and Zoe sighed in unison, just happy to be in one another's company. Peace settled around them comfortably, but Alice couldn't help but wonder if it was going to be broken. Knowing her luck, it probably will be. And soon.
