Matt smiled as he entered his classroom for the first time in a couple of weeks. With the Christmas holidays now over, he was back to managing two jobs. From his list of the mares' foaling dates, it looked like the next few weeks would be busy busy busy. This term students would also be moving on to their individual projects, which normally meant a handful of foals to hand rear and arguments with other teachers about why half of their pupils were excused from morning classes. The explanation 'because they were up all bloody night with a newborn foal' didn't go down so well with the un-horsey teachers. He sighed, settling down into his desk. Only 10 minutes til the students arrived. Matt had planned to come and sort out for the class half an hour ago, but an emergency had come into the clinic. Thankfully the suddenly lame horse had a simple problem and a week or two rest and some painkillers sorted it. The male dreaded missing a class because of a vet emergency. If that happened he wouldn't be allowed to juggle his two jobs, yet he loved them both.
Digging around in the mass of paperwork and other, unidentifiable objects on his desk, he pulled out a black board pen with a small shout of glee. Thank god the students weren't here yet, they'd think he was mad. Laughing at the thought, he turned and wrote the projects on the board, along with a note to the students which was just easier to write than keep repeating.
Breeding Records - how to keep accurate and useful records for mares, stallions and foals. Artificial Insemination - how it works, when it is allowed and things that can go wrong. Reproductive Advances - studying new techniques for reproduction and their positives and negatives Orphan Foal Management - learning how to care for an orphan foal (practical) 0-6months Foal Management - how to manage a foal at foot Stud Management - everything you need to know about how to manage and run a successful stud farm. Sport Horse Breeding - breeding practices, learning about current top breeders, what makes a good sports horse, what makes good parents for a sports horse. Racehorse Breeding - breeding practices, learning about current top breeders, what makes a good racehorse, what makes good parents for a racehorse.
Journals All journals need to be up to date and will be collected in by the end of the lesson. I have a front page sheet with each mare's basic information here, if you have not yet started your journal you are welcome to use this. After that I expect to see notes on eating/drinking habits, exercise and behavior of your mare. It is not necessary but it is nice to see some of the work you do with your mare journaled after that. Once your foal is born, I would like an information page on the foal - which I can provide -, as well. After that, eating habits and behavior should be recorded and for journaling it is the same as with the mare. The only time required to be journaled is the birth of the foal, if you are present. Yes, you will get pulled out of other classes to watch your mare foal. Yes, you will get dragged out of bed to watch your mare foal. ;)
He sat down at his desk with a hint of a smile on his face and started to relax. The male enjoyed this part of the course most. Students would get to do two or three of these projects over the rest of the year, and then they would move on to other topics if they continued the subject. His eyes flicked up to the clock and he started to tidy up his desk in the last few minutes, noting down students he needed to talk to for whatever reason on his post-it notes when he came across them.

Harry grinned as he hurried down to the broodmare barn, eager to see Trinket. With his time now divided between three horses of his own, and then Oscar, class horses didn't get much time spent with them. And of the time he could spend, the rescue horse Sunny demanded most of it. Trinket was a pretty happy-go-lucky horse, and he made an effort to groom her for at least 10 minutes every day and take her out for some grass, but she liked a fuss being made of her. Before he could feel too guilty, a gaggle of younger students who couldn't be older than 16 started playing with the mare, reminding him how popular she was. Sighing, he left them to it and walked down to the classroom.
Opening the door, the tall male almost had to duck his head to fit through. At 6'5" he towered a foot above Remii, and was amazed at how much he'd grown compared to her. Once, they were equal in height. He stopped reminiscing long enough to nod a greeting towards the teacher and notice no other students had arrived yet. He took his normal seat near the window and gazed outside for a moment until the teacher spoke to him, reminding him that Trink would be foaling in a week or two, and questioning what project he was doing. For the first answer he nodded, for the second, he gently shrugged his shoulders and held his hands up apologetically. Mr. Harman fell back into silence and Harry mused over what project he would do. He needed to talk to Remii, see if she thought he had the time to take on an orphan foal. He loved the idea, but she was way better at time management than him. Except when it came to her taking on horses of course. He smiled first at the thought, but it turned to a frown as he recalled her break. Shaking the thought from his head, he also wondered about a couple of others. With Trink foaling soon, he had a perfect subject for 0-6 months Foal Management, but Stud Management and Sport Horse Breeding interested him too. It was a lifelong ambition of his to eventually set up and run a small, quality stud and training yard for show-jumpers, but it seemed a long way in the distance. His head turned at the sound of someone else entering the room, and he watched to see who it was.

Cara slipped into the broodmare barn and headed straight toward the stall that housed Rain and her baby. "Hello my beautiful girls." She whispered as she looked over the door and smiled as both horses looked over at her. "I shall come and see you after class." She kissed the mare's muzzle as Rain walked to the door. "I'll take you both out for a walk after class. I wish to speak with Mr Harman and see if she can take you for a gentle ride that afternoon in the paddocks." Leaving the mare and her daughter, she headed down to the classroom.
Walking into the classroom, she graced Harry with a smile that many didn't get the opportunity to see before the shutter fell back over her face and she headed toward her seat, sat down and turned her attention to the board. She chewed on her lower lip as she thought about the projects she wanted to do. Foal Management was a given since she was already spending her time training L'éclat de Lumière, and the spunky filly was a pleasure to work with. She wasn't too sure what else she wanted to do.
Opening her satchel, she pulled out the binder she used for this class and the notebook she was using for her journal, she hoped that the teacher found it as informative as he wanted it as she tried to cover everything in each entry.

Jemma pulled her fingers through Ever's mane. The mare seemed to have missed her in the few weeks that she was gone, and she had missed working with the mare. She had left a week before Christmas break for her sister's funeral, and had only come back a few days ago. That mean't there was a nice gap in her journal, but she was sure Mr. Harman would understand why. It was only another five months until Ever foaled down, and depending on the gender of the foal, Jemma already had names picked out. It will be as pretty as you, she whispered to the mare. Ever nudged her softly, before returning to the hay net.
Kissing the mare on the nose, Jemma made her way to the class. Her messenger bag was slung over one shoulder, and the A3 journal tucked underneath her arm. Everything about the mare was written in there. From her history to feeding schedule, habits and exercise plan. There were already two students there. Cara and Harry, both who she didn't really know well. She nodded to Mr. Harman and took her seat. Looking at the board, she noted projects. Everything sounded good, but already she crossed orphan foal management. She had looked after one once, and it had turned out to be a disaster, as the foal just didn't want to suckle on the surrogate. Hand feeding had turned him into a pushy one, but luckily it someone had adopted the foal before it had gone to far.
Stud Management and Sport Horse breeding were the ones she would do, if she was allowed to do both, and she noted her choices in her note book. Now that that was over, Jemma knew that after class she would go check up on Eagle and then the horses in the vet barn. Sherlock, Spartan and DJ would be seen to later. There was never enough time in a day it seemed.

Matt smiled as the students started to trickle into his classroom. By the time three had arrived and settled, he was fidgeting. Standing up, he started speaking to his audience of three. "Okay, I know everybody isn't here yet, but could you just let me know which project you want to work on first. Please feel free to come and talk to me about the different projects if you have any questions." Sitting down again, he started fiddling with sheets of paper, wanting to get the lesson started. He was in a bad mood already because he'd been running late getting to the classroom this morning, and now he was struggling to wait for everyone to arrive.

Josh had a grin that reached his ears as he left Bennett Stables. He and Slumber had just been working in the outdoor arena, and it had gone extremely well. In fact, it was the best ride they'd had since arriving at the college. Now though, Josh had a class. Equine Reproduction to be exact. Unlike the other students in the class, he was using his own horse. Ruby was due any day now, and her hormones were all over the place. Sometimes she could be very affectionate, demanding attention and wanting Josh to fuss her and shower her with care. Other times, she couldn't stand the sight of him. She seemed to blame him for her predicament, and him alone. She had bitten him twelve times this week already, and it was only Tuesday. He couldn't wait for her to have her foal, then he'd be saved from all her rage. Still in his riding gear, he began to head toward Lockwood stables where his class was to be held.
As he entered the yard, he was greeted by a few nickers from various mares. He spent a lot of time in Lockwood stables and made a fuss of all of the mares eventually. Ruby threw her cranium over the stall door and pinned her audits when she saw who it was. He suppressed a sigh and cautiously approached the hormonal mare. She instantly bared her ivories at him as he grew nearer, and he thought over moving any closer. He knew he had to though, he had to check on her condition to keep his mind at rest before he went to class. Trying to avoid her jaws, he peered over the stall door to look in at the rest of her. Her swollen barrel looked fit to burst, and his expression was slightly awed when he saw it. She took this time to launch her assault. Her teeth snapped at his forearm, causing him to jump back in surprise. The pain then hit, and his expression contorted as it did. He looked at her, anger hinting at his expression. She glared back at him. "Bloody hell Ruby. I'll be glad when that thing is out of you." he grumbled, rubbing his throbbing arm. Before he could be assaulted again, he turned to make his way to the classroom, narrowly avoiding Patrick, Miss Jones's pig. Chuckling at the animal, momentarily forgetting his injury, he leaned down to pat the funny creature. He was still baffled by the barn managers strange choice in pet, but was now very fond of the Pot-Bellied Pig.
Josh was still clutching his arm as he walked toward the classroom. The pressure eased the pain that just wouldn't dull, much to his annoyance. He let himself into the classroom silently, flashing an automatic smile to those who resided in it. Josh was a naturally friendly person, and he didn't like to show his weaknesses. He kept his hand covering the bit, which was now turning almost scarlet red in coloring. If he took his hand away, you'd also be able to see the deep indents of Ruby's teeth. That bloody mare. he thought as he entered the room fully. "Hello Mr. Harman." he offered in a polite, friendly tone aloud. Walking to a seat in an area about center of the room, he placed himself down heavily and leaned against the back of the chair. Only then did he realize that he hadn't brought any work with him to class. His expression was more than a little panicked, and he knew that he had no time to go and collect it. It would be pointless, his dorm was over the other side of the campus. He made a mental note to ask Mr. Harman if he could drop off his journal later in the day, hoping the teacher would understand.
Will add Remii and Jay later.
