Harry smiled as he hurried into the broodmare and foal barn on campus. Trinket was due to foal any day now, and he constantly checked on her whenever he had a free moment. He always checked on Maggie too, the broodmare Remii cared for who was due around the same time. Another mare in the barn, Delight, was due too, so it was rather busy. Today though, he hadn't checked on Trinket since first thing this morning, he'd gone on a day long trail ride with Desi. The strange mare thoroughly dislikes people, but Harry had been working with her to remind her that people could be fun. The trail ride had done just that and he was pleased that she seemed to be improving. However by the time he'd fed his horses it was late and he had ended up doing his homework and going to bed. It was dark at the moment, and 3 am according to Harry's watch. He normally didn't come down and check on the mares at this time, but he hadn't been able to sleep tonight. He would have gone and spent some time with Casey, but he didn't want to disturb all the other equines on the yard. With orphaned foals and mares needing frequent checks, there was almost always someone about on the broodmare yard no matter what time of day, and he knew the yard manager often camped out in her office when mare's were due to foal.
The first mare he passed was his own, and he stopped to check her over. Trinket was led down, and even Harry's inexperienced eye could pick up several signs of labour. Milk was appearing around her teats, and the consistency of it was normally clear. Now it was white and he would almost describe it as looking sticky. The mare was covered in a light sheen of sweat, and a feeling of excitement and nervousness spread through Harry's body. Without checking the other mares, he rushed to the office where Miss Jones would hopefully be. Knocking gently on the door, he waited for a response, hoping to that the woman would wake up easily.
