"Brooke! Get off!" Jay grumbled, swiping at her hand once again. She had the annoying habit of ruffling his curly locks every five minutes. He wondered for the thirtieth time this trip why on earth he'd asked her to go and get Puzzle with him. Brooke just sat beside him, laughing her annoying laugh over and over again. They were just leaving the yard where Puzzle had been living for the past two years. It was only an hour or so away from the college, but they'd been at the yard since 8am this morning. It was now 5pm. It had taken six hours to try and persuade the mare into the trailer, first her owner had tried. Puzzle flat out refused. Then a few of the grooms. Brooke also had a go. She got further than anyone else who'd tried. Jay hadn't stepped in just yet, he didn't want to be associated with the 'scary' trailer, not if he was going to have to work with Puzzle so much already. Eventually, he'd stepped up. She'd managed to get out of Brooke's grip and Jay had enough. Strangely, Puzzle had followed him straight into the trailer. There was a little hesitation when her hoof clattered against the cold metal, but nothing too bad. Everyone had been astounded, including Jay himself. Maybe things would go better than expected.
The two stopped their chattering, well arguing, to see if Puzzle was still calm. There was a quiet shuffling, but nothing out of the ordinary. Jay gave a relieved sigh, and Brooke smiled slightly. Cinnamon took this opportunity to dive over the front seat and land efficiently into Brooke's lap. The female beamed affectionately down at the red merle pup, who very much resembled Checker, Cinnamon's father. Both Cookie and Checker were still lounging on the back seats, in peaceful silence. And then the arguing started up. "So Jamie," Brooke started, using Jay's full name. The boy growled at her, shooting her a sidewards glare. Brooke giggled childishly, loving how quickly she could get under his skin. "How's Spencer?" Jay bristled, but he was surprised that this topic hadn't come up earlier. He wasn't stupid, he knew Brooke knew everything there was to know about him. In fact, she was just as bad as him. Actually, if not more. If they could get on for long enough, they would make a deadly team. Jay pulled his lips into a straight line, obviously refusing to answer her. He'd truthfully been missing Spencer terribly. They had seen very little of one another recently, and it was getting Jay down. This little trip away, even if it was for a day, had been the best thing for him. Even if he did have Brooke as company. Said female was still peering at him curiously, but decided to drop it. Jay definitely beat her on the stubborn front, and if he didn't want to talk about Spencer she wasn't going to be able to make him.
The talking had turned to Hayden now, more of mutual concern. Brooke had been to see his Jay's brother, who she classed as her cousin also even if they didn't share the same DNA really, and had been startled by his condition. She was saddened to hear that he'd been much worse than that lately. As much as she liked to taunt her cousins, she hated seeing Hayden in that state. It made her sick to the stomach. They fell into silence once again, this time because they were travelling up the drive way toward the college. They went straight toward Campbell stables, to which Brooke couldn't be more pleased. She'd fed her stallions this morning, but she still had to feed April. The mare wasn't having morning feeds anymore, she needed to loose weight. So, instead, she had one feed in the middle of the day and two hay nets. Probably not the best diet, but it was working for her so far. Already she looked a little slimmer. They pulled up outside the stables, Jay parking the vehicle as smoothly as possible. The three dogs instantly leaped up. Jay rolled his eyes, scooping Cinnamon up under his arm and climbed out. Brooke did the same and Checker and Cookie followed, both having jumped onto the front seats. "Right, here is the plan Brookiekins!" Jay called his cousin by her affectionate nickname, which he knew she hated. Her oracles burned into the back of his head as he made his way around to the back of the horse box. "You go and open the stall to Puzzle's stall, the one to the left of Question, and then take Sandy out to the pastures. I'll take Question out after. Please and Thank you!"
After a little persuading, and Jay promisingly that he'd take her shopping tomorrow and buy her a new dress which she wanted, Brooke agreed to the plan. She wandered off and opened the stall, then gathered up the lead rope and head collar which belonged to Jay's foul tempered mare. Actually, Sandy behaved for her. Obviously the girls had to stick together. The two, plus Checker, made their way quickly out toward the pastures. Brooke took the route which would avoid going anywhere near the horse box. We didn't want Puzzle to be mentally scared from meeting Sandy just yet. Brooke dropped of the mare, who'd followed with no problem and went into the pasture with arguments. Brooke smiled, patting Sandy's neck affectionately, and then danced off back to the stables to shower April with attention.
Jay watched as Brooke took the longer way to the pastures with Sandy. He shook his head in dismay when he saw how quiet and well behaved Sandy was with Brooke, he was sure he was the only person Sandy did misbehave for. Never the less, it was now safe to let Puzzle out of the box. She'd been very quiet the whole trip, much to Jay's dismay. He wasn't sure what he'd be faced with when he eventually got her out. Opening up the trailer, he lowered the back door as quietly as he could. It hit the ground with a quiet thump, which was enough to make Puzzle flinch. Jay's oracles softened with pity. She was going to be a challenge, but he hoped it would be one he enjoyed. As he let his eyes swipe over her, he was struck by how pretty the mare was again. She looked amazing in photograph, but in the flesh she was stunning. He began to coo softly as he entered the box, watching her carefully. Her posture was tense, but her audits swiveled frantically to lock on his vocals. They soothed her a little, but when Jay came around to her face he was met by fearful oracles. His expression softened more so, and he quickly but carefully untied her lead rope. Without warning, she shot from the trailer. He was glad that he managed keep a hold of the rope. She began to dance frantically, fear radiating from the lithe mare. Jay allowed her to do so, wanting her to get it out of her system. He signaled to the two canines, who were sat not far away, to pass and go to Question's stall. They knew exactly what he meant, and met up with Brooke who was on her way back to April. They followed her and Checker quietly, Cookie glancing over her shoulder at her master.
Puzzle's nares were flared as wide as they could, her audits moving frantically. She'd stopped dancing though, but was refusing to enter the yard. Jay wasn't going to push her. He had all the time in the world. He took a couple of steps forward and gave her the length of the lead rope. Her eyes widened nervously for a second, glancing around, before stepping back toward Jay. Her muzzle pressed into his chest, resting there gently. Jay couldn't keep the smile off his face. This was a slight improvement. He'd let her stand there a little while longer before making her walk any more. Let her get accustomed to the fact that he wasn't going to make her do anything she didn't want to. He ran his hands soothingly along the length of her face, unaware that Brooke had appeared in the entrance of the yard. She watched her cousin and his new purchase closely, before clearing her throat. "Jay, hurry up! You're dogs are following me around and I don't actually want to take them to see Quincey and Locus. Get the mare inside already." she snapped, having enough of waiting around. Jay whirled around, startling Puzzle who moved back a couple of steps. "Don't give me that crap Brooke, I know you're going to play with your new toy! Put them in Sandy's stall. I can't rush bringing Puzzle in, she doesn't want to and i'm not going to make her just yet." he retorted, smirking at the anger on her features when he called her bluff. She stormed off, arms crossed over her chest. Damn him for knowing her too well!

Spencer had taken Roadie on a simple little walk around the campus, seeing how the horse reacted to certain scenes and people. He seemed to be a horse of reasonable sense, though sometimes he spooked at random things, not that that was to be considered unexpected. All horses had their quirks.
He led the gelding towards the barn, his eyes finding the form of an unfamilier girl. He cocked his head to study her. She looked familiar in some way, like a ghost of someone he once knew. He ran his eyes carefully over the features of her face, and then it hit him. Jay.
Spencer's life had not permitted him to seeing his beloved recently. He could only sigh, wondering where his darling was now, and maybe search for him. Maybe. If he was able to read all the chapters he'd been assigned for his differant classes and pick up some feed and cat food.
Suddenly, the girl yelled out something, making him raise his head as the gelding jerked his cranium in surprise and neighed loudly, his call trumpeting in his startled tone. He reared away from the danger, and Spencer tightened his grip on the rope, bracing his body for the tug of the powerful animal. The horse rolled his eyes wildly, but calmed when he saw how calm Spencer remained. The boy patted the Thoroughbred neck, then turned to the girl, walking over to her in his gliding manner.
"Oi!" He said to her, his blue eyes firey. "Don't you know better than to yell at the top of your lungs around horses? Some of these animals aren't all calm and placid-like. Were you raised in a city or something?" Spencer normally soft tone had a harsh edge to it as his anger bore down on Brooke.
