'When the heart is happy, the face smiles.' Jace knew that it was plain foolishness to be running after a girl that he knew for the best of a year. His friends called him hen pecked, but there was something about the blond that had captured his heart and had forced him to change schools in his final year. It was as if he had been living in black and white before he met her, and that first time he noticed her fiery spirit, it blazed with technicolor. Now he was as far away from home as he could stand to be, and hoped that he made the right decision. The cab ride from the airport felt as if it was going to take forever, and by the time they ended up in the College grounds, the nerves in the pit of his stomach felt like bullets being fired simultaneously.
He didn't have much luggage. The guitar case and two suitcases was all that he took off from the ride. Using the last cash he had on him, he paid the cabby and stood at the front steps looking at the building. Here goes nothing, he whispered to himself, and entered. It was lunch time, so he didn't expect anybody to be in. He took a seat in the waiting room, inspecting the art works that dotted the wall, and in the end started reading one of the equestrian magazines that was on small table. He didn't mind the wait, all he wanted was to see Ruthie.
Ruthie was spending the lunch break trying to ward off the teasing and prying nature of Kian and Ieuan. Max was apparently not much help either, because the male just kept quiet with a bemused expression on his face. Bella took on the same attitude as she did, rolling her eyes at the apparent immaturity. Come on guys. Dafydd needs a break. Kris dumped the twins on him today, and the poor guy is having it hard, Ruthie said somewhat tersely, heading out of the cafeteria towards the main office. She was missing Jace terribly, and it was hard because he was sitting a few hundred miles away in Wales. Being around couples also made it slightly hard. Kian had Bella and Ieuan had Max. Okay, so Niall was also single, but he avoided large groups like the plague.
The office was also quiet when they entered, the secretary that was usually there taking her lunch break. Ruthie had walked ahead from the rest of the group, but they came in soon after. She was struck dumb however by the human form in the chair. Jace? she whispered, her mouth hanging open and it showed her shock.

The pair exchanged triumphant grins at Ruthie's attempt of swaying their attention, glad to get the annoyed reaction out of her. Kian and Ieuan had finally gravitated back to one another, unable to keep away from their best friend any longer. It relieved a lot of the student body, thankful that they would no longer fall victim to the snappiness of each boy when they were alone. No matter how happy Ieuan had been around Max, he was nothing without his partner in crime. And Kian just craved the company of Ieuan. They were terrible without one another, and now that they were on speaking terms once again, they threw a lot of their time into annoying Ruthie. A favourite pastime for the boys while they were children, and now that she was back with them they'd picked it back up like clockwork. Both boy's stood to follow Ruthie as she departed the cafeteria, Ieuan giving Max a quick kiss and Kian shooting an unsure smile at Bella. Yeah, he still had no idea where he stood there. But, that was his own fault. The pair sandwiched Ruthie in between them as they walked toward the office, reeling off teasing jabs and annoying jokes as quickly as they could think of them. Ieuan had his arm thrown casually over her shoulder, while Kian's swung loose at his side as he walked. The pair had noticed Ruthie's unhappy manner over the past few days, and had tried to cheer her up a little. Nothing seemed to work though, but the pair didn't stop. In fact, if anything, they grew more persistent. Even though they could see they were annoying her. Ruthie slipped from under Ieuan's arm though, choosing to walk ahead of them instead of with them. The pair rose a brow at one another, but said nothing. They followed close behind her into the office, coming to an abrupt halt when she did. Eyes wide with confusion as Ruthie spoke, the two turned their gaze on the boy sat in the chair. "Jace?" They questioned aloud together, looking at one another with confusion. They racked their brain, trying to think of why the name sounded familiar. The thought seemed to strike them at the same time, recalling a story Niall had told them not long after he and Ruthie had arrived at the college. Jace had been an ex. Both boys narrowed their eyes and turned their glares on the boy in question. "Jace." They snarled in unison this time, stepping either side of Ruthie. You could say that Ieuan and Kian were protective. A little too protective would be how Dafydd would describe them. Ruthie? Probably pathetic and annoying. That wouldn't stop them though, she was a sister to them so they weren't going to let this kid think he could do as he pleased and waltz back into her life. Especially after how Niall had described him. It was more than evident that the curly headed male had a strong dislike for Jace.

Jace looked up when he heard his name, and a broad grin spread across his face. This would be luck in its best form and he stood up quickly. He was unsure, though, of how to greet Ruthie. Yeah, he had his own ideas, but the two 'bodyguards' at her side seemed like they wanted to punch his lights out. It's me Ruthie, he said, wondering what was going on in her mind. He didn't give her any warning of his arrival, but they hadn't broken up on bad terms. If anything, there had always been a unspoken hope that they would get back together, but neither was committed enough to do the long distance relationship idea type thing.
Ruthie quickly gained composure, her shock passing quickly. She noticed the happiness in his face, the awkwardness of their greeting and the total silence that followed. She left Kian and Ieuan behind her, and practically ran up to the one she missed for the entire week and longer. Throwing her arms around his neck, she made a whispered statement, glad that the two behind her couldn't hear. I missed you. A lot. she whispered into his ear. Kian and Ieuan would not be happy with this turn of events, so she quickly let go. Why didn't you tell me that you were coming? she demanded loudly, not really caring about introductions.
Jace had been shocked into complete and utter IQ drop as Ruthie greeted him. He hadn't expected everything to be fine between them, and if anything, he hoped that they would be able to be more than friends. He wanted Ruthie back, and he was willing to go any length to do so. I missed you too, he whispered back, the smile to big be gone so easily. Guilt had always been with him since the accident, and he doubted that it would ever go away. Ruthie let go too soon to suit him, but he restrained himself from taking her hand in his. I wanted to surprise you, he answered simply, glancing towards the two males that looked positively murderous at that moment in time.
Surprise would be understatement. More like telepathy and a lot of fate playing a role. Ruthie knew that she was the reason. She may have been blond but she wasn't stupid. His answer to her whisper caused her to blush, and then it deepened when he answered the demands. Then she remembered that Kian and Ieuan was also around. Oh, erm, Jace. Meet Kian and Ieuan. My replacement brothers for Jean, and the ultimate annoyances, she introduced, throwing them glares in the process. The looks on their faces was hilarious, but they would be paying for it later. They had obviously been listening to Niall, and her best friend made it quite obvious that he didn't like Jace. Very few people did until they got to know him.
Pleasure to meet you, Jace greeted, but didn't hold out his hand to shake. He had thrown of the nerves, knowing that he was safe as long as Ruthie was around. Now he just needed to convey the message to Ruthie that he needed to talk to her privately, but the audience they had didn't seem to want to leave any time soon.
